  • "Please don't vote for a candidate who seeks to actively harm me and take my rights away"

    "Stop patronizing me!!"

  • Collateral damage?

What an odd phrasing. This is not about collateral damage. The Republican Party is running on an anti-woman agenda. Women are actively targeted. There's nothing collateral about it.

  • Get everyone to vote.

Women need to vote in their obvious interest.

Men need to stop daydreaming about living in the Handmaid's Tale and wake up to the realization that women's rights matter to all of us. They owe it to the women in their life to step up to defend them.

The only excuse not to vote in this election is to not have the right to.

And people need to stop whining about being told that it's the most important election every time there's an election. They're being asked to set off a few hours to preserve democracy every 4th year. It's not such a huge thing to ask.

  • And here's their site: https://www.propublica.org/

Some reasons I think they're neat:

    1. They broke the Justice Thomas corruption scandal
    2. Generally high level investigative journalism
    3. They're free and donation based, not subscription based
    4. No bullshit, just journalism
    5. They take an active interest in the Fediverse - it seems they're willing to meet me where I am.

  • To anyone unsubscribing: Remember to subscribe somewhere else instead. If not you're just helping Bezos achieve his goal of the death of journalism.

    @ProPublica@newsie.social is one good alternative.

As others have said, if you want to hurt Bezos, target Amazon.

  • Meanwhile, am I on acid or something, or is Rolling Stone suddenly one of the more credible American news media? How the fuck did that happen?

  • I wouldlove to hear the perspectives of women living under these conditions. Have they spoken to other women about it? Their mothers or daughters?

Do they assume that everyone around them is supporting the fascists, and that they are the only ones to secretly have doubts? Or do they assume that others have similar doubts, but they're afraid of talking to them about it in fear of being snitched on, in proper 1984 fashion?

  • He's a literal danger to the entire fucking world. Piece of shit.

  • So much talk about the fear of the election being stolen, yet we're weirdly eager to forget that it already happened less than 30 years ago.

Trump stealing the election by, say, Florida not counting black votes, would not be an unprecedented event in modern American history.

  • Nothing will be perfect, but there's an editorial process. Journalists do their work trying to speak truth to power, the editors make sure their claims are fact checked and well presented. Investors cash in on sales and can (unfortunately) have a say on strategic decisions of direction and hiring and firing, but they stay out of the editorial process.

The problem here is not who "gets into the news business". The WP had already written and approved the endorsement. Their journalists got into the industry to do journalism. It's a job many people dream of, not a huge mystery.

The problem is who has the money to buy a newspaper. And when the asshole billionaire ends up doing it, how do they interfer with the editorial process.

  • And to lie about their reasons for doing so to their readers.

  • I have a PhD, the only time I use my title is when booking tickets for trains or planes with German companies.

I'm a social scientist. Nobody hears the word "doctor" and thinks of a person like me.

  • I guess Etsy could be a good place to look. It has gotten annoying in the last few years, but sadly it's still the best place for a lot of people to sell their crafts.

She might enjoy a unique handmade piece by a silversmith there just as much or more as a high-end necklace, and unique hand-made designs can be cheaper than diamonds. Maybe you can even reach out to a silversmith and design something together.

I tried searching for #jewelry on mastodon.social, and @kosmimatis@handmade.social was the first thing to pop up. Of course you probably want to look around more, but their latest post is not necessarily a terrible starting point. For illustration purposes of course.

In short, I think it's possible to go about it looking for a silversmith rather than a jewellery store. What it lacks in expensive stones it makes up for by being potentially personal. :)

  • A bit worrying to hear so many stories of lines for early voting. I get how it's also a good sign, but... It shouldn't really be necessary to wait in line? If it's bad already, won't election day be a disaster? Are lines equally long in Republican areas?

  • Our apologies, unfortunately our website is currently unavailable in most European countries due to GDPR rules.

Huh, would not want to visit that site even if I could.

Anyway, good for anyone in Atlanta - I saw the Boss a few weeks ago and he's still very much got it. I find it a bit odd that you guys have rock star headliners for political rallies, but that might just be jealousy speaking.

  • So he's wearing khakis, previously a flannel, sometimes also a sport coat.

Hopefully these are the brave fashion decisions needed to defeat fascism in America.

  • I certainly wouldn't want new users to randomly end up on .ml because they think it doesn't matter.

  • A brief mention of Mbin and Piefed might be nice, and possibly Mastodon alternatives like GoToSocial, Pleroma, and Misskey as well. It highlights that content is software independent, and is a bit more fair to some smaller but nevertheless impressive projects.

  • The fascists must be defeated at every level. It's like treating cancer. The problem is not over before it's all gone. And even then there's a risk of it returning.

  • Van Hasselt said he thinks the blade’s inscription has religious ties that are written in Latin.

...if it's written in Latin, couldn't they just read it? What is it I'm missing here, making this theory somehow worth reporting?
