  • I've never done anything like this, but would it be possible to place such a sensor between the mattress and the frame instead? That would result in a fraction of the load due to the distribution of the weight. The challenge would be to set the threshold right.

  • The series of cartoon character collectibles were such a disappointment, though. If it's not assembled from at least 7 weirdly bendy plastic parts it's not a proper kinder surprise toy!

Also the old 2-part eggs were the only proper ones. The new ones where both parts are tethered together are probably better in a few technical ways, but the old ones were so satisfying to open! And you could fill them with water and baking powder and use the explosion to launch little pebbles straight up.

  • I don't think this is about numbers going down. Tesla stock has gone down before, without him having this reaction. I think his real problems are more personal:

    • He's stretched himself too thin, and the stress is getting to him
    • Related to the above, his drug abuse is getting out of hand
    • He is deeply insecure, and more than anything, he wants people to think he is cool. People have made it abundantly clear that they do not think he is cool.

So it's not really about number going down, it's about people explaining number going down with "everyone hates Elon Musk".

  • About a decade ago my employer had an intern present their findings from analyzing some survey data. One of the findings was this:

"People who answer surveys are really old. Like really old. Like thirty."

  • That depends entirely on how good you are at managing your money. With regular payments you'd still have a ridiculous amount of money even the first month, and no matter how badly you fuck up you're still rich 20 years from now.

  • There was definitely some fuckery behind the scenes in 2020 also. Everyone pulled out and endorsed Biden at the same time.

It's not just about finding the best candidate, it's also about not disillusioning the voters by very obviously ratfucking the primary. Don't piss off your voters right before a general election! Why do we even have to say this?

They didn't even have a good reason to do so, because Bernie would have lost anyway. Just let him lose fair and square without pissing anyone off! And I say this as a Bernie voter. He was a good influence on the candidates, but he didn't even win Washington State last time. No way would he have won a fair primary. The protest votes would have tapered off as soon as he looked like a real contender.

  • It's barely sold outside the US because other places (like the EU) also care about the safety of people outside the vehicle. That's why European and Asian cars (except the models explicitly for the US market like the Tacoma) are designed for pedestrians to be deflected, while US cars are a moving brick wall which will squish them like a bug.

Also, I suspect you'd need commercial plates and a special license to drive it most other places, due to the weight.

  • Was the Pinto really that bad, though, or did Mother Jones do them dirty?

In the numbers above, the Pinto is hardly a standout deathtrap; I mean, by modern standards, sure, everything on that list is a horrible deathtrap, but the Pinto was safer than the Toyota Corolla or the Beetle or the Datsun 210, and none of those cars are as burdened with the oppressive fiery deathtrap narrative as the Pinto is. In fact, the Pinto’s overall deaths per million vehicles is better than the average!
