  • I used to have to occasionally run this but I'd say it has been at least a couple of years since I last had to. I was a pretty early adopter of pipewire because it solved some Bluetooth issues that pulseaudio had. It has improved immensely since I first started using it.

  • Software RAID is much faster than you think, even in RAID 5. Many of the algorithms used in software RAID leverage special CPU instructions that can process the parity operations at a very fast rate. Reading the data, which is by far the most common operation in a Lemmy instance, uses even less computational power than writes.

  • I grind a single dose at a time too and it works great. The only issue I have is that my Rancilio Rocky grinder has a fair amount of retention. Swapping out the stock elephant spout for a 3d printed open one allows me to scrape out the retained coffee.

  • Cool, thanks for the write up. Maybe I'll install it and give it another try. I have tried it a couple of times and it has been quite a while since my last attempt. It definitely was the combat system I had difficulty with.

  • The dev hasn't updated it in a bit and it's getting more broken for me, especially with loading certain image types. I did pay for ad free on it when it came out but I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with the issues lately.

  • A while back I sealed and reinsulated my house and replaced all the duct work. It made a massive difference on my electric bill as my house's HVAC system is a heat pump. I did all the work myself and got a rebate from the electric company and it ended up costing me about $1000 out of pocket. I did some calculations back then and my payback period was only a couple of years so it has been paying me back for quite a while now. It was one of the best things I have ever done.

  • When you get new tires or have them rotated you're supposed to take them back for tightening after 50-100 miles. Perhaps they ought to update the documentation to take them to the mechanic for a few ugga duggas after a couple flights.

  • I don't understand it either. Unfortunately, I know quite a lot of people in my personal life that are terrible with money like that. A lot of people grew up in families with terrible financial sense and then they bring that with them into adulthood. Some people eventually figure it out but by that time they're pretty late on getting their retirement planning going.

  • All the parts they used internally are made to be as cheap as possible. The rollers that support the drum, and the belt tensioner, use low quality bushings that wear out prematurely. The extra fiction the parts caused would cause the belt to fail too. I'd have to tear the entire thing apart every two years or so and replace these parts to keep it running, far more often than I'd have to repair any other dryer brand. The sensor dry cycle on it never properly dried the clothes, and the steam function on it didn't work very well either.

A friend of mine has a Samsung dryer, washer, fridge, dishwasher, and microwave. He hates all of them with a passion for similar reasons.

I don't hate everything Samsung as I'm quite happy with their tablets and watches, but I'd never purchase another one of their appliances.
