I know it's very popular online to brag about being an asocial shut-in, but believe it or not some people like their jobs and like the social aspect of the office. The problem is the bigwigs applying the same rule for everyone either due to being out-of-touch with normal humans or just through greed, but don't assume your experience is universal!

A couple of years ago I set up an old iPhone as a Spotify connect device (as in it sits in a speaker dock and I play music through it controlled by my phone). It was similarly unsupported but I found a not-too-hacky way of installing an older compatible version of the Spotify app via iTunes on a PC (which involved having to install iTunes and find an apple account). I imagine there are instructions both official and amateur available for you to follow, but hopefully you should still be able to install stuff on it. Just don't do anything involving sensitive info as you'll be out several years of security updates!

I tried out gadgetbridge too, seemed largely functional though I did notice the Bluetooth drop. Also it apparently uses old Bluetooth rather then BTLE? I'll stick with Rebble for now but it's good to know there's a decent replacement when it eventually packs in!

OK, so after a few days of denying the pebble app network privileges everything seems to be working fine! Obviously I can't access the app store now but I can just temporarily reactivate network if I want to download something new. I don't really use any apps that need network (in the pebble's old age I'd rather it take it easy and save battery and let the much newer phone run the things I need to run!) so there's no real loss for my use case.

I get your point, but that would also assume that shares in fidget spinners would go through the roof as soon as the kids who love them had disposable income. Laboured metaphor, but my point is people's opinions change. On the other hand Apple don't offer subsidised versions of their products for educational use out of the good of their heart, so clearly they see the value of exposing people to them early.

This has been their marketing strategy since the iPod. Also it's the opinion of teenagers, so it really doesn't matter (sorry teenagers reading this, you probably don't have the money to be shaping the decisions of megacorps).

Exactly, so why is rooting even mentioned?

Kind of horrifying to use when you're used to a unixy shell though!

Strange that the focus point of this article is rooting, you can modify your device to install custom firmware etc without needing root exploits anymore!
