  • I don't know what you are developing, but I mostly play RPGs. And sure, I tend to go towards older games I've played and know a lot. But I also picked up Eiyuden Chronicles, Sea of Stars, and Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 and played them through completely.

The issue for me is that new games try really hard to emulate and reference older titles in the genre. They act as a love letter to the original games and, in my humble opinion, end up worse for it.

The developers chase nostalgia and don't let their games stand on their own two feet. They don't trust the game they made to be good without being propped up by the old games they reference. They fail to write a compelling and unique story instead of filling them with references to games they loved. In some cases, they try to have all these different systems and mini games that were innovative in their original form, but now are clodged together and fighting each other for my limited attention.

Take Eiyuden Chronicles for example, I loved the Suikoden games and have played them multiple times. But they added every single minigame from the 5 games that came before it as well as adding new ones. I couldn't focus on the story while trying to navigate all these little systems. I'm not young and with a ton of free time anymore. I don't want to study in order to figure out some skill tree with hundreds of branching options. I don't want to feel like I'm missing out on story or game play because 20 minutes in I had to make a decision where I wasn't aware of the consequences.

Personally, I just want an emotional story that I can immerse myself in without having to study how to play a game or time pressure where I can't enjoy the journey.

Anyway, if you take anything away from that long winded rant it should be: if you make your game good, trust that it will be able to stand on its own against those old ROMs then people WILL play it and love it. Don't compare yourself to the past and people falling back to their "comfort games" and make your game as great as you can. Create the game that you love and would want to play and know that others will want to as well.

  • I find the limit to be useful. It prevents random relationship drama and filler.

But I think both film and television series work great for different stories. Having television without a definitive end makes stories weirdly convoluted and meaningless as they try to change another season, just the same as the empty film sequel.

  • I keep trying to get into it. I have one and do some neat things with it. But personally. I've found it to just be another tool to fabricate for some other projects. But the little knick knacks keep being the main models showing up on printables and thingiverse.

I'd love to see a repository of 3d models of parts for various machinery and car parts. My entire interior is basically molded abs, why aren't there models of all those pieces I can just print?

  • Oh man, the car parts one take up so much space too.

Do I need three exhausts for my WRX? Nope, but I keep banging them up off reading.

3 engine blocks, all needing some form of rebuilding. Mostly just new bearings. Or an entire extra wire harness because in the last rebuild it was just easier to buy a new one.

All my old shocks and springs after I replaced them with outback gear.

And that's just what fits on the car. I've got big brake kits for cars I don't even own! But they're like $2k if I can ever find a buyer.

  • I think he painted himself into a corner with just how much he needs to resolve in the last book. Hell, we don't even know what king is killed.

I think he could do quite a few things to make it more than just a third book. He could hand wave away some parts as "well that's already well known, go talk to X for that story." And then put that as a separate book.

Or just say to properly tell the story he needs more time than expected and give himself more than 3 of the in story days.

  • My guess is that it's asking for you to confirm your date of birth, to a minimal degree of accuracy without actually having to reveal your date of birth.

I kind of like the idea. Most people know what their star sign is, whether they believe in it or not. So they will be able to answer quickly and correctly. Those that need to look it up it might need to be more critical of the login for.

  • I have smart switches, mostly because I'm a tinkerer and build and repair things for fun. I work in IT, so I don't trust any of this. But the switches work like normal for people not used to it. While I also have a button that turns all the lights off in the whole house at once.

My main automations are basically timers. They turn lights on and off at sunrise/down. And one that turns on my backdoor lights when my garage door opens.

As for cars, I totally agree. Adaptive cruise control is the extent of the smart I want in a car. I've had too many false positives where the car will automatically apply the brakes when it didn't need to. And not once where I was in danger of crashing. Once on a bend in the road where a car was parked on the side and another where an RV had pulled to the side on a turn out to let people pass and the car freaked out because it didn't realize the road turned.

I've also had it nudge the wheel too often when I'm purposely hugging one side of the lane because there is construction or a car on the side of the road.

  • Depending on what people do, the government already has their fingerprints.

Personally, I work around schools so I had to get a background check and fingerprinted for that. I also am licensed to handle explosives, both federally and at the state level. I been fingerprinted for that. I've gone through TSA for hazmat endorsement on a commercial driver's license. That needed fingerprints and a background check.

Getting fingerprinted to get through airport security is the least of my privacy concerns.

But my threat model isn't the TSA. They aren't a concern of mine, although I do opt out of their facial recognition.

I am concerned with internet surveillance, corporate surveillance, and communication surveillance.

  • I hate how corporate Plex has become. Instead of making their apps better, now it's how many "free" services they can try and get you to use.

All I wanted was my hosted media. And to easily share that with family without having to manage user accounts.

I run jellyfin along side it, but Plex still gets the most use.

  • Same emotions?

On a good day by Above and Beyond.

I first heard it at a rave, rolling on ecstacy, going through pretty bad depression. It was during their "Group Therapy" set. I felt so connected to everyone around me. So peaceful. So understood. I cared and loved everyone around me and I felt the same in return. Sure, I was high. But it was a moment a decade ago that I can still remember vividly, and a point where I started taking my mental health seriously and started to deal with it and finally start to feel good about myself.
