  • For a lot of things, it's a solution in search of a problem. I set it up on its own vlan because since I do networking every day for work segmenting things off is really simple for me.

I only have a handful of automations that I use.

    • Turn on the garage backyard lights and the back door lights when I get home after sunset.
    • Send my robo vacuum out whenever I leave the house for more than 5 minutes.
    • Turn on the porch light and the exterior housing lights at sunset and off at sunrise.
    • A button to turn off all the lights on my house on my phone that I use every night when I go to bed.
    • A button in my living room that turns on two table lamps, a floor lamp, and some accent lights instead of turning them all on individually. It also turns them all off.
    • Scene buttons at the bar that will turn on multiple lights and change colors. I'm planning to do animations with the lights here so that I can press a button and the lights do a little dance.

I don't really like motion sensors for rooms or areas because there are a lot of times I come in I don't actually want the lights on. I also don't have a million sensors because I don't want to deal with batteries or really care about everything. Things should have a purpose and not just lights that feel like they are there just for the sake of "hey look, I have lights that do something."

  • I have mostly kasa switches too. I don't like that they don't expose the motion sensor in them to HA.

For fans, I'm considering these to replace the ones I have that just don't work. https://inovelli.com/products/blue-series-fan-switch-zigbee-3-0?variant=42097818992805

The ones I have are complete shit. Their firmware seems to lock up regularly and not even the buttons work. There is no reset button on them, so the only way to restart them is to flip the breaker. And half the time that doesn't even work.

  • Olive oil is a low smoke point. It's good in a salad dressing but bad to cook something like steak and terrible for frying foods. It burns at a temperature lower than you'd sear meats at. Low smoke point oils tend to be richer and more delicate in flavors.

Canola is a mid-high smoke point oil, it's good for searing meats and frying foods.

Safflower and avocado are a high smoke point oil. You can cook at a much higher temperature without burning the oil.

If you can find a place to watch it, there are a couple episodes of Good Eats where Alton Brown goes over the different types of oils and their usage. I find his show to be great at learning the whys behind a lot of the cooking choices and techniques.

  • Yes.

Societal issues like crime would be greatly reduced if people were able to live with relative security regarding housing and food.

Hobbies and recreational activities provide significant mental health benefits. If everyone was able to afford housing, food, and some recreation we'd have a massive shift in this country.

I'm not even saying working particularly hard. Everyone seems to need a job and they don't all have to be back breaking hard work to earn these things. Mcdonalds and Kohls aren't prestigious jobs, but shouldnt those workers deserve to know they have a roof over their heads and food on the table?

  • I agree, it's not a slap on the wrist.

But I will say that the majority of our sentencing is actually too long and too harsh. We've had decades of being "tough on crime" but it hasn't worked and will not work. We need to rethink our criminal justice system rather than just hand out bigger and harsher penalties.

  • This is a weird topic, because on the one hand, they have every right to speak and assemble, no matter how much we like it. Even the ACLU took on a case defending the American Nazi Party and their right to assemble and march. It truly is a right which the government cannot have any say in who it applies to. I won't go into any bullshit argument that they'll go after other people next, but it's a right that needs to apply to everyone.

However, that only applies to the government. Everyone else can and should tell them to go fuck themselves and corporations can ban their asses from every service online. They don't have any right to having their voices amplified online or any other service.

  • It's can feel awkward, but it's okay to speak over them for a simple "good morning" and maybe a wave. Youre not taking over the conversation.

I know for myself, it can be hard because I don't want to interrupt, but I have to remind myself that it's okay sometimes. I don't need to wait for them to let me speak.

Just don't be a dick and take over the conversation. Say good morning and let them go back to what they were talking about.

  • I thought acme or certbot could handle the DNS entries with an API call to your DNS provider.

It may require another plugin though. Googling some variation of certbot acme automate DNS challenge will give you a dozen tutorials.

  • The writers strike who has to fight over getting streaming royalties goes to show that the money doesn't even make it to the artists.

The issue isn't paying. It's how fractured the services are and how we don't even get to pay to own a copy of the art.

  • One is perspective. For me, most situations don't fucking matter because no one died or was seriously injured. I have to deal with safety pretty heavily on a job where either one of the people I'm responsible for gets injured or killed or a member of the public can be injured or killed. It makes other areas of my life less critical.

Another way is reframing. He got the last word, but you said made him run away. You did more damage, what you said was more impactful that he had to run away. When you look at it through that frame, you won. On the other hand, you had a debate on the Internet, so maybe neither of you won.
