  • I'm sure if I put a high density battery in my old eee PC, it could probably run for days.

I really hate that we've gotten such energy intensive applications. And honestly, I don't think for a lot of them they have gotten much faster. They are bloated and programmers have been allowed to do that since every machine has so much extra resources now.

  • Yea. This is my big thing. Probably good on well traveled and maintained highways. Mostly good on city streets. It's gonna be dog shit on a rural road.

I'm also curious how they would handle snow or other inclement weather that obstructs lane lines completely.

  • I think optics can make a big difference. Seeing the cameras in cars become much better so that they can read easier. But all road signage is already codified in a way that it should be relatively easy to do OCR or even matching on.

  • Honestly, I think our regulations have gone a little too far. Requiring backup cameras and automatic braking systems sounds like a good idea, but now we can't have a bare bones car.

Prices are up because there are so much additional shit they need to include. Personally, for a lot of my driving, all I want is a geo metro or similar shit box.

I mean, if I buy a two-seater convertible (if I can even find a new one) why does it need a backup camera? There isn't even a back window!

  • For day to day driving, maybe not.

But if I'm trying to to break the back end out, engine brake downhill, or have a dead battery and want to pop the clutch to start it I really want a manual transmission or a sequential gearbox.

I also can rebuild a manual in my garage (and have) so I'm more comfortable with something I can easily service if I need to. I drive 20 year old cars and intend to keep them, and any other car we buy, on the road for decades to come.

  • What's the torque band? Driving a diesel, it's really high compression and torque is applied low in the rpm range. Gasoline is a lot lower compression and might be twice the rpm to get the most torque. Outside of that torque band and your using more fuel for less movement.

  • I just moved into a house a couple years ago. While I'm mostly getting used furniture, I'm slowly looking into making my own and learning to repair what's out there.

I'm really bad at staining or painting. I never feel like what I do comes out even.

  • Customer support: trust but verify.

I believe they have a problem. I believe they think they restarted, but I'm gonna check anyway.

    In disagreements: "does it matter?"

Most shit we get angry about isn't important. In the grand scheme of life, most shit just doesn't matter.

  • Yea. It's really bad looking for something online. They may be under the "solid wood" category for material, but they still are 90% particle board.

I prefer spending extra knowing that I'll have something for decades and not have to replace it in a year or two. Fortunately for me, about 80% of my homes furniture is from Habitat for Humanity. They are fantastic for having a good selection of quality stuff for cheap. Some might need a little repair, but they tend to only accept decent stuff in the first place.

  • Lol as if cutting my lawn is fun. Or that I'd even want to join your party.

It's hypocritical to think that your loud noise when Im trying to sleep is okay but my loud noise when you are trying to sleep isn't.

But this is life living with other people that don't sleep the same hours as you. Sometimes shit is going to inconvenience you, and I'll do what I can to minimize it. But I've got shit I need to get done too and I'm just not going to not do it because it might suck for someone for an hour of their week.

  • If any of my reports told me they booked an appointment through the health care we provided and it was during the work day I'd just say okay, mark it out on your calendar as busy so I don't bug you or expect anything from you during that time. If they need to account for all their time like some roles, bill it as admin time.

  • Cool. No loud parties after 9pm then? Or is inconveniencing my sleep okay because you do it at night?

I've got one day a week I can do yard work, and only until 9am until it hits over 90° out. Sorry, buddy. But you might have to deal with some noise. Wish we could all live in perfect harmony. But until then you have to deal with some shit you don't like and I have to deal with some shit I don't like and we'll do our best to not inconvenience each other too bad.

  • Sure. A lot has rotted away, but much modern furniture is designed with so much MDF and other manufactured wood products that aren't resilient in the least. Moisture will destroy them, they take gashes super easy, and are soft wood.

I'd think the furniture our grandparents had would be more likely to have been solid wood.

That's not to say there aren't solid hardwood pieces being made today. But they are extremely expensive and are competing in a space with poor regulation of descriptions and all the flat pack Chinese imported stuff thats literally 10% of the price of good furniture that will last.

Solid hardwood furniture is a luxury.

  • Mindful and considerate, yes. But that doesn't mean I put my entire day on hold for people that don't get up until 10 or 11.

8am is pretty reasonable start to the day for me.

But I also believe that people bitching and saying no loud noises before 10am are being just as selfish as the people who get up and do yardwork at 6am. If someone has a problem or some extraordinary reasons for wanting it to stay quiet later, they can talk to each other and try to find a compromise.

And out of 7 days, if you are only being inconvenienced for a couple hours maybe that's something you should be more tolerant of.

  • External locus of control.

Bad things in someone's life is not their fault, but the fault of whatever scapegoat.

    Can't get a girlfriend? It's women's fault.

    Can't get a job? It's illegal immigrants.

Can't afford to do the things you like? It's the government taking too many taxes.

Whatever problem someone has, they are looking to blame someone rather than make any changes in their own life.
