Spicy take: I hope they dump 2077's engine and go Unreal.
I recently followed this guide to try and set up "optimized" path tracing (no raster lighting, with everything raytraced) in 2077, and on my lowly RTX 3090 it runs like cold molasses. Not a chance. Raster + RT reflections is all I can manage, and it looks... good.
Meanwhile, I've also been playing Satisfactory (an Unreal Engine game from a comparatively microscopic studio), and holy moly. Unreal Engine's dynamic lighting looks scary good. Like, I get light bounces and reflections and everything, and it runs at like quadruple the FPS in hilariously complex areas, again, with a fraction of the dev effort.
Cryengine in KCD2 is rather sick as well, though probably less tuned for urban landscapes.
...So why don't they save a few years and many millions, and just go with one of those instead of poorly reinventing the wheel?
What's with Lemmy and Avatar memes as of late?
Not that I'm complaining. I'm a foaming mouth guy tier fan, but I see a Koh the Face Stealer meme as more niche than, I dunno, a Doge meme or Spongebob.
This is the mark of oppressive regimes, right? The details aren't what matters (or, really, how they were drawn), but the plausible appearance of conclusions that fit the party line. Criticism? Just ignorable dissidents that no one important will hear.
We're going to see a lot more of this, as chatbots are, unfortnately, rather good at making shallowly plausible walls of text. It's easy for a lazy, incompetent person to do.
AI can be used to fact check papers too (for example, programatically following citations to see if they're real, uncontroversial, or at least somewhat sensible), but it's more technical to implement, and even if it wasn't, that doesn't even matter. This admin can simply shrug of any longwinded criticism as partisan and move onto the next controversy, knowing full well attention spans are too short to care. In other words, the information environment is the fundamental issue here.
There’s some technical reasons this is 100% accurate:
- Some tokenizers are really bad with numbers (especially some of OpenAI’s). It leads to all sorts of random segmenting of numbers.
- 99% of LLMs people see are autoregressive, meaning they have once chance to pick the right number token and no going back once it’s written.
- Many models are not trained with math in mind, though some specialized experimental ones can be better.
- 99% of interfaces people interact with use a fairly high temperature, which literally randomizes the output. This is especially bad for math because, frequently, there is no good “synonym” answer if the correct number isn’t randomly picked. This is necessary for some kinds of responses, but also incredibly stupid and user hostile when those knobs are hidden.
There are ways to improve this dramatically. For instance, tool use (eg train it to ask Mathematica programmatically), or different architectures (like diffusion LLMs, which has more of a chance to self correct). Unfortunately, corporate/AI Bro apps are really shitty, so we don’t get much of that…
You need software (like MakeMKV) to read the metadata from the DVD and properly chop up or combine the video files. It should be able to export without any re-encoding.
On a separate note, if you want to shrink the files, I’d recommend av1an if you are comfortable with a little CLI and want the best possible encoding efficiency. In a nutshell it chunks videos and encodes them in parallel, hence its great for really long files like movies/TV on DVDs.
Some mod packs are just unstable.
Could be a specific area/item crashing it, and TBH all modded servers need regular maintenance like mob culling and regular server restarts. But it could also be a problem with your host, yeah, and the M3 Pro is going to be way faster than any CPU your host has. Plenty of RAM too.
I’d recommend running it with GraalVM EE as your JVM.
I tend to gravitate towards Enigmatica and ATM myself (as their devs/dev process is pretty good), but not sure about Ozone or skyblock mod packs.
It would be a fast host (and client) for more heavily modded Minecraft.
You could self-host an LLM, but unfortunately 18GB total system RAM (so less than 14GB usable by the GPU?) is pretty skinny.
You can do some stuff to an iPhone with one. Like sideloading, I think?
Be careful with -ctk q4_0 -ctv q4_0, this can royally bork some models. q5_1/q4_0 is a bit better, but you have to compile for it.
If you are interested in really long context, you should look into setting up a TabbyAPI docker image (with working rocm flash attention if you can manage it). Its Q4 KV cache is really low loss by comparison.
Another good route is an MoE (like Qwen3 30B) with all the experts on the CPU, especially using something like the ik_llama.cpp fork which is optimized for this.
Left populism is a winning strategy too.
Not if its surpressed in (social) media, unfortunately.
As horrific as it sounds, the US very much needs a 'Democrat Trump.' But even that can't happen in the current media environment. There are all sorts of proposals to address that, but the problem seems to be that people can't help themselves and keep using Twitter, watching Fox, stay glued to Facebook or whatever.
There's a massive difference between well-off, or even wealthy (think a practicing doctor/dentist or small business entrepeneur) and billionaire.
Saying 'screw your savings' to people like that is the conflict the billionare class wants, instead of everyone focusing on them.
It's a horrifically fast 4wd RS200 in a cossie's skin, heh.
Same with the Peugot. You'd think it's just a 205 until you get in, and see a worryingly loud engine behind the seat.
Nice catch.
That's a straight up racecar, though. Like it's built exclusively for entertainment and fun, not epeen.
I'd respect someone driving a Ginetta G58 around (or, more practically, an Ariel Atom, a homogilation special or something) way more than a chonky, overpriced lambo. That screams "I don't care what you think, I like to drive" instead of "hey everyone, look how rich I am!"
Like this people driving around these monsters. That's beyond flaunting wealth, that's someone's neurotic hobby, and most bystanders aren't going to realize how special they are compared to the Porsche trailing them:
Even lemmy.world is in this bucket (not sure about other instances). See: https://lemmy.world/post/28304534
This is my second time bookmarking this meme.
…I can’t find the first.
Right? It makes Afganistan (the Soviet and US one) look like nothing. A calamity doesnt even begin to describe it.
Ugh, you said that way too well.
Still (again, rolling with the reasoning), it's an existential problem, no matter who's fault it is or how much of a victim they are or how much fatalism they've accepted...
I can understand the mistrust of the system, but I can’t understand the conclusion that some anonymous yahoo with no inside perspective somehow has the resources to have figured it all out.
There was always some percentage of the population that believes in that stuff, for a variety of understandable reasons.
That's... fine. It kinda worked.
The problem is social media has amplified those voices by orders of magnitude because they're engaging (hence, profitable). The missing panel above is the FB post, YT segment, podcast (all recommended algorithmically) or whatever that led that guy down the rabbit hole.
In other words, It's not a content problem, but an engagement one.
I mean, billions of people would disagree with you. Many would say Ukraine and their western backers are at fault.
But theoretically, I am struggling to picture how Russia’a war goals (again, accepting every reason for its continuation from Russia) could possibly be beneficial to Russia, and the um oppressed Ukrainian people, in light of this measurable effect on demographics. Whatever the reason for Russia staying in Ukraine is, even with the most extreme sympathetic view of Russia and their position, it is clearly not worth it, and they should just capitulate an pull out for their own benefit.
I'm all for that.
There was a King of the Hill phase I was rather fond of too.
