  • I used Power Delete Suite. It does work fine with one caveat: It'll only action on posts/comments that are displayed in your Reddit user profile.

You'd think that's enough but I'm pretty sure Reddit's own backend database is broken. There are definitely posts/comments within Reddit that are yours but won't display in your own Reddit profile. Like I think for older accounts sometimes posts/comments get disassociated from your profile page & you won't see them anymore unless you search around in reddit.com or via google.

For example before I deleted anything I did a backup using Power Delete Suite. Now that my Reddit user profile is mostly empty I am still finding old comments using the standard reddit.com search, & I can still edit/delete those manually even though they do not display in my Reddit profile. And interestingly they don't appear in my backup file that was created with Power Delete Suite - Leading me to believe that these comments exist in Reddit's database but somehow got detached from displaying in my main Reddit profile.

.. so depending how you want to go about it, maybe don't close your Reddit account right away. You may need it if you want to search for & edit/delete posts/comments that don't display in your Reddit profile.

  • Eh it depends. When we had one of our subs locked there in protest we constantly received modmail from random google searchers asking to be let in so they can read random posts they found via google. The funny thing is many of those posts were things I had commented answers in. Makes me wonder how many of those google searches are now dead ends after the comment answer was deleted.

On the other side, back when I was a mod there I used to point people to earlier posts that discussed whatever question was being asked & sometimes people would complain that the earlier posts were useless since other people deleted their own comment answers in them. Even before Reddit protests people would routinely wipe their Reddit history, as a mod it was easy to see it happen in real time.

So overall people deleting their own comments does have some effect on making searches pointing to Reddit, or within Reddit, kind of useless.

  • Gotcha, that makes sense now. Some VPN services do sell a dedicated IP in which case yes you can basically open as many ports as you like since they are all forwarded. That's great to hear, they'll definitely be on my VPN list next time I'm looking around for one.

  • It was a good chart but stopped being updated around 2018/2019. I don't remember the specifics but IIRC the owner (That One Privacy Guy) sort of ran out of time / retired from doing that stuff. He was also active on Reddit moderating VPN subs for a while & was great at keeping out the VPN spammers/shills there.

He had his own website that was bought by SafetyDetectives (a spammy ranking / affiliate linking site) so for a while people were worried that the new owners would break the VPN google doc with paid referral listings & whatnot. Kind of disappointing that it would be bought by a company clearly promoting the opposite of what That One Privacy Guy was working towards.

I'm not sure if that Google Doc you linked is a copy, or maybe the last version that existed. It was never totally clear if SafetyDetectives actually got control of the Google Doc but the rest is history now.

  • Thanks for the info! If you just use vanilla OpenVPN/Wireguard with it then I'm guessing the port forwarding is something configured on the Njalla website, correct? That would be good news if true & opens up the possibility of setting it up on a router with port forward.

  • I personally suggest to use njalla. Few people talk about it but it’s a very very good provider, better than mullvad imho. Allows port forwarding

That's interesting, their website barely mentions any features about the VPN so I had assumed they don't offer port forward. Just curious

    • How many port forwards do they offer?
    • Is it a static or dynamic port forward number? e.g. do they automatically change the number on you after x amount of time or does the port number stay the same?
    • How do you configure the port forward on their system? Can it be configured on their website? Or must it be done via a VPN application they offer, or some other way?
  • That might be up to you, depends how much you need to do with the proxy part of that. With the seedbox provider I subscribe at they offer SSH capability so I can SSH into the seedbox. But if I want I can also create a proxy tunnel through the SSH connection & configure my web browser to use that local proxy port to tunnel through the seedbox's internet connection. It's not something I need to do often but is totally workable.

I do that with PuTTY, you can google around for that e.g. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-route-web-traffic-securely-without-a-vpn-using-a-socks-tunnel is a good overview.

That said I'm sure there's actual SOCKS proxy software you can install on the seedbox if you need more advanced features.

(don't know anything about app development / flutter so can't comment much on that)

  • You'd need to ask the staff at those private trackers.

I think the expectation is that you may want to browse the site using the same IP address(s) that you are running your torrent client(s) on. e.g. if you are already using a seedbox/VPN/proxy then those particular trackers allow you to browse the site using that same IP address from the seedbox/VPN/proxy you are torrenting with.

They probably aren't expecting you to browse the site with some random open proxy, Tor, etc. & may end up banning you if they see those random IPs show up.

  • Just as a sidenote if you really want to go that route there are some trackers that can be joined with a donation upfront. It is better to join trackers with an invite, or wait for open signups, or interview to join if possible, but if you're really thinking of going that route at least this won't break any of the tracker's rules.

    See https://opentrackers.org/tag/donation-signup/ for example.

PS - Joining a tracker that way does not make you immune to their rules just FYI, you'll still get banned eventually for not seeding/maintaining ratio & things like that.

  • You'd need to ask people in those communities if they're interested in creating and moderating those communities in the Lemmy/Kbin Fediverse.

Or if you're interested in creating and moderating those communities then go for it.
