  • supposedly we're super business/small business friendly. not a business owner, but i expect there are significantly fewer fees and very significantly lower taxes for someone doing business here compared to new york. also a lot less regulation.

it's the same reason a lot of big businesses come here.

  • i would be more bothered about knowing i will never be able to afford any life-saving meds that get developed with my DNA than not getting a cut of the profit.

but anyway, i haven't given them mine, for whatever that's worth (since i know at least one family member did).

  • i mean... i'm pretty sure milk and cream and coffee exist outside the us? and i think there might even be some non-americans who combine them?! but i dunno, i might be wrong. 🤔

  • It's like people in this thread don't realize how massively addictive caffeine is? I see addicts all the time try to excuse their addictions with every excuse in the book. I was addicted once. It took every part of my soul to quit that shit. caffeine is a mistake many make and don't come back from and pretend it their choice shit should be band. Just did to it's addictive nature. Banned for the same reason lotterys are generat only owned by the state. Shits is a a great investment. People will kill themselves or others to give you money

(edit /s proud nicotine addict here)

  • try talking to some ciswomen and find out if misgendering hurts. spoiler - it does.

edit - fwiw, i keep hearing that lemmy is friendlier than reddit. this doesn't align with my experience so far, it's the same hateful shit as always.

  • probably there is a disclaimer of some sort, and people think they can handle it. but also, even people who worry they can't may be desperate for a job.

i work with people who have experienced terrible things, but it's a little easier to manage because i am hearing about it (only to the extent that people want to talk) and not seeing it, so i get a little psychological distance. my environment is very supportive and i'm hearing things sometimes, not watching it hundreds of times in a day. even then, people in my role are at decent risk of burnout.

like, you never know when you're going to hear a thing that just gets to you.

doing what these mods do for hours and hours a week without support seems like a recipe for secondary trauma and burnout. edit - and yes, i'm pretty sure their environment amounts to "suck it up and keep going."

  • look, it's a word most american women don't hear directed at themselves outside of really hateful or abusive contexts. i have been called "bitch" in the grocery store. i was called "cunt" by my abuser, and only by him.

the person who challenged you has a good point - the use of that word in american culture is intended to be particularly dehumanizing and degrading to women.

compare - if you had used "n..." you would have likely been challenged there as well, regardless of your intent in using that word or your own identity.

  • is there supposed to be a lift inside the shoe? because the height of the visible heel just looks normal to me. dressy boots often have a pretty noticeable stacked heel.

disclaimer - i'm no fan of DeSantis

edit - okay, video at the link has made it all abundantly clear!
