  • I hear this opinion a lot, and I always ask what specifically would you have them do? They don't control the house, so if they can't get Republicans to go along they can't pass any legislation. That's just reality.

  • That’s not bad for James if she can just argue to the court that this bond is blatantly invalid.

Between Knight not being approved in NY, not having adequate cash reserves, and writing a bond that just says Trump will pay, I don't think that should be a problem.

That being said, I would still prefer having a valid bond posted. Turning a judgment into liquid assets is not easy, and can be very time consuming.

  • It would be bad for James in that an insurance company isn't going to pay $175m if the judgment is affirmed or the appeal dismissed. It's obviously much easier to cash a check from an insurance company than it is to find assets, domesticate a judgment, and then to levy and sell those assets.

  • It's bad because if he cannot pay at all, then he cannot appeal.

This is patently false. He does NOT need to post a bond in order to appeal. He can absolutely appeal without posting a bond. The only purpose of the bond is to stay enforcement on the judgment.

  • I don't know if it is intentional or not, I try not to assign a motive to opinions, but your viewpoint seems to require that black characters have a justification for being black in a way that you don't for white characters. I think there's a difference between mere change, such as Annie or Little Mermaid, and incongruous change, such as whitewashing Wakanda, since it is intended to be a cloistered black nation in sub-Saharan Africa.

  • I’m not saying they need to be paid the same, but people here seem to purposely ignore the math

Yes, you...you are the one ignoring the math. The WNBA has existed for 27 years and doesn't make any money. In 2019 the WNBA brought in $60m, while the NBA brought in over $7b. In 2019 WNBA lost $10-12m. Can't find a source on profit or loss newer than 2019.

WNBA is projecting $200m in 2023, NBA is at $10.5b. WNBA is improving, but not even in the same ballpark as the NBA. Also remember that there is a base cost to run the league, so the players can't just take the same percentage. Their CBA has revenue sharing but they haven't hit the metrics to trigger it.

  • Not sure what answer you're looking for, but because the attorney general brought a civil case. Perhaps they couldn't prove criminal fraud, since criminal trials have a higher burden of proof. Perhaps they could satisfy certain elements of criminal fraud, but not all of them. Perhaps they could demonstrate that the actions (actus reus) took place but not the intent (mens rea) required. These would all be questions for the NY AG.

  • Why does this guy get to run for president when he appears to have committed millions of dollars in fraud? Shouldn’t that be jail time for anyone else?

Because he was found guilty in a civil trial and not a criminal one. Think of OJ, convicted of civil wrongful death but not murder in a criminal court. Lose money, but don't go to jail.

  • That being said, to say it’s “a positive” to outright replace white people in movies is also in bad taste.

Here's the issue though, as I see it. If we assume that Hollywood was racist for many years in the past, then most actors would be white. So now if you say you can't change the characters race, you're perpetuating past racism by locking down characters as white in stories that don't require it.

I don't care if Annie or the Little Mermaid is black, make the story intriguing. Pull me into the plot with believable and relatable characters and I'll never question why they're the race/gender/sexual orientation they are.

  • The comment I replied to said if you can't pay go to jail. The subject of this story is the civil fraud trial of Donald Trump in New York. There is no bail and there is no bond to be released from jail in a civil matter. That would be a criminal trial, which this is not. His bond is only to stay the execution on the judgment while he appeals.

That's why I mentioned a debtors prison, where people who can't pay debts would go to jail.

  • That has not been the rule. Debtor's prisons were abolished a long time ago.

Edit: For those unaware, this is about Trump's civil fraud trial, there is no bail or bond to get out of jail. There is no jail. He has the option to post a bond to stay execution of the civil judgment.

  • It's not though. The question makes the assumption that he would have been handed over for the Nuremberg trials.

It absolutely misses the point, and so have you. It is a hypothetical whereby he was captured, turned over to the Nuremberg trials, and found guilty. That's the basis of the hypothetical. Saying that wouldn't have happened absolutely misses the point of the hypothetical.
