  • How does DAW-less production work? No editing?

  • No, not suitable at all. I would be more interested in using my phone with GrapheneOS as only device.

    But:

    • mail filters work fine with my provider, not in K-9mail (fair-email gives me anxiety)
    • office stuff just sucks, Collabora is as big as Libreoffice but no GUI options
    • MPV is very barebones and VLC very far behind on updates
    • missing GIMP
    • missing PDF editing
    • missing video or audio editing
    • missing code editing
    • missing commandline stuff
    • no qbittorrent, Aria2 works but only for leeching, BiglyBT works but has a weird UI and restricted features
    • no browser with tab groups, containers, security, etc.

But for a ton of other stuff a phone works very well

    • obvious one: small form factor
    • uses very little battery, awesome standby battery consumption
    • camera, audio, video recording
    • media consumption
      • offline (MPV, Gallery apps (why is this not a thing on desktops?), music players, antennapod)
      • online: grayjay, soundbound, antennapod, rimusic, ...
    • messaging (simplex, signal, element, briar, ...)
    • slight image editing (snapseed)
    • image compression (signal, save before sending, exit)
    • video cutting (signal, save before sending)
    • writing markdown (markor, acode)
    • weather
    • webapps
    • social media (jerboah, fedilab, ...)
    • navigating (there is no OSMAnd alternative on Linux)

In many areas there are way more apps for android, in many others way less.

  • The license you want is a copyleft license, not a permissive license.

  • You can update and change repos.

But I hope you use kernel livepatching, because that uptime is scary. You missed like 50 kernel updates

  • I only know Optifine. What is fabric?

  • Also hier soll das neue eingebettet sein

    Und das ist das alte

    Das neue ist hässlich

  • Local file transfer?

    I cloned a 1TB+ system a couple of times.

As the Anaconda installer of Fedora Atomic is broken (yes, ironic) I have one system originally meant for tweaking as my "zygote" and just clone, resize, balance and rebase that for new systems.

Remote? 10GB MicroWin 11 LTSC IOT ISO, the least garbage that OS can get.

Also, some leaked stuff 50GB over Bittorrent

  • Looks as if that Window got recalled

  • The distro is not regarding logs but local network, public wifis, etc. Data minimization.

For logs of course you can tell them what you are running.

  • Because the distro is nothing without the kernel, the kernel is nothing without the distro, a PC is just for getting shit done of have "fun" and you should stop wasting your time on Lemmy

  • Yeah but that reveals your distro. Default is nowhere used I think, but I think "PC" is a good default.

And "user" is for sure the default username

  • Pro tip: name your user user and set your hostname to PC

  • Windows is Christianity

    Apple is some strange cult

    Linux is Nihilism

  • Nerds are like dogs it seems

  • Yes Aria does torrent download and has support for an "upload" notification and finding good seeders. But I have to see if it supports seeding.

  • Aria2 is just for download right? biglyBT is updated more recently and also opensource for a long time, so I trust it more. But the UI sucks.

  • Why jshelter? Used it but dont remember the use case. I use UBO and Noscript, together with "Cookie autodelete" (as mobile has no support for allowlist websites delete all others), Bypass Paywalls Clean

  • AMD is not generally better, not on Linux not on Windows. The GPUs are more expensive (I heard) and have worse performance, and no CUDA support (likely NVIDIA threatened them so they told the ZLUDA dev to stop).

NVIDIA totally sucks, but my experiences with AMD CPU+GPU (Thinkpad T495, Vega mobile 8) were not really great with constant freezes after sleep).

Intel really has the best support. And maybe some ARM GPUs.

  • Pixel 6a, GrapheneOS. Soon EOL, I would buy a 8a if you dont have a Pixel.

Novacustom Laptop with Coreboot and Fedora Kinoite.

Browsers: Mull on Android (DivestOS repo), Firefox RPM + Arkenfox on Fedora.

Torrent apps: BiglyBT on Android (seems to be the only one reasonably updated with support for seeding?) and the legendary qBittorrent Flatpak on the Laptop

I have 2TB of storage on the Laptop NVME but my VPN stopped providing port forwarding, so seeding only works to people with open ports. Nonetheless, I seed until share ratio 5 and then often delete the stuff.

Not on the phone, as I have storage issues 🥲 128GB is NOTHING

  • To be fair, this is my experience in environmental sciences too.

But okay, it was pretty broad. Like, pretty much everything scientific, data.

But no language courses, not much programming, missing stuff here and there.

But my Uni also encouraged (actually enforced) to choose random extra courses.
