  • It's possible to protect against heatwaves on a city level. Increase the albedo value of the city by doing the following: Incentivize lighter colored roofing and walls, grow leafy trees for shade, cover parking lots with solar roofing (and add EV chargers). Basically do whatever possible to reduce the amount of asphalt and darkish materials in general, being hit by sunshine.

No it won't save your ass when ambient temperature is 50C, but considering that cities are by their very nature hotter than the ambient temperature out side of the city, these things would help reduce that gap.

  • I think summer time is the superior timezone up here in Estonia. Look, the sunrise is already after 9 AM in December. Nobody's gonna be seeing the sun before work or school anyway. But sunset is around 3:30 PM. Schoolkids could get an extra hour of sun after school by being on summer time in the winter.

For the time period of the autumn clock shift, we get an 8:23 AM sunrise and a 5:45 PM sunset one day and then the next it's 7:26 AM and 4:42 PM. You suddenly go from it being light outside when you finish work, to it already being dark. Because of winter time.

In the spring, you suddenly get an hour of extra daylight after your work/school day. Who doesn't want that? All you lose is that sunrise goes from 5:55 AM to 6:52 AM. But sunset goes from 7 to 8 PM basically

  • It's just limp dick size that changes but summer penis and cold shrinkage can definitely happen to a man.

Of course if you live far from the equator, you might also get summer horny to combat the winter SAD. I think this one is gender neutral, but might be helpful to have a lady chime in on this one.

  • Hey, I agree that Thanos was stupid as hell. If he really wanted to save the universe, as an all powerful god at the point where he's got all the infinity stones, he could've done something about reproduction rates, or resources being regeneratable... I just meant he's the only one I've been able to empathize with recently. There's so many villains who just want power for the sake of it, or to end the world. Thanos wanted to do what he thought would save the world. Was it stupid? Sure. But his goal was not.

  • The AI only needs to alert the doctor that something is off and should be tested for. It does not replace doctors, but augments them. It's actually a great use for AI, it's just not what we think of as AI in a post-LLM world. The medically useful AI is pattern recognition. LLMs may also help doctors if they need a starting point into researching something weird and obscure, but ChatGPT isn't being used for diagnosing patients, nor is anything any AI says the "final verdict". It's just a tool to improve early detection of disorders, or it might point someone towards an useful article or book.

  • Funnily enough, out of modern superhero movies, I think MCU got me to empathize with a villain the most. It was Thanos, who had a legitimate reason for reducing the population of the universe and didn't even want to discriminate.

I've grown bored with the MCU and haven't seen any of the newest films, but Infinity War was actually great.

  • Here in northern Europe dairy and meat industry go hand in hand, that is, when a dairy cow stops being productive it gets ground to beef.

For regions where beef as food is more valued than here (beef's so expensive, few people buy it in Estonia), meat moos are entirely different breeds and fed differently. Milk moos might end up as mince, but probably not a quality steak. You don't need nearly as many moos if you're only producing milk, and then maybe some meat products from cows, compared to when you're raising a bunch specifically to be eaten.

Chickens raised for meat also don't lay eggs. So if you only eat eggs and not chicken, way fewer chickens are needed. Also, if you're not even willing to go vegetarian, switch out beef and pork for chicken. Per kilogram of meat, chicken is way less carbon intensive (pork is also less intensive than beef). It's still a lot compared to eating potatoes from your own garden of course.

  • What he's been saying is that NYC has an affordability problem. People can't afford basic necessities (rent, food, transportation, childcare). Can't speak for availability and pricing myself, I don't live in the US.

  • Now there's plenty of reasons to consider him awesome - those have been listed by more serious comments than mine.

But did you know he used to rap?

Also, right-wing media tried to brand him "Zohran the Destroyer" and very promptly stopped doing so when they realized it sounds way too cool. Apparently he's going to destroy NYC by advocating for 1) raised minimum wage, 2) universal free daycare, 3) A working fucking bus system. He's got personal experience with the problems of the bus system, numbers, a working proof of concept, and a plan to Trump-Proof the city

I'm not even American and I'm rooting for him. Both because he might actually improve people's lives and because he just seems awesome. Been a long time I've seen a politician with his charisma, enthusiasm, and vision. I hope NYC votes him into the office!

  • That's what I've heard as well. Unfortunately not a lot of authentic Thai restaurants here in Estonia. Will be sure to try one when I see a promising place and have an evening I'm prepared to spend in agonizing pain.
