  • "I'm just tired and bored with myself. Hey there, baby, I could use just a little help".

  • Try the Thomas Covenant Chronicles. They taper off in quality over the series but the first three, particularly the first, are incredible. Quick premise: man diagnosed with leprosy, hates the world, hates himself. Transported to fantasy land. Does very bad thing within minutes of being there. Has consequences that scar generations and shape the world. A true anti hero.

I'm not a fantasy fan really, but these are an exception.

  • I'm in the ACT. I can look at most of neighbours without rage. Most. Not enough.

  • Australia

My life is pretty great all things considered. But in about an hour I'm walking down to the local primary school to cast my 'yes' vote for the referendum.

    Info here: https://www.yes23.com.au/

The 'no' vote is tipped to win.

So, later this evening I'll get confirmation that nothing has changed in my country. We're still a backwards, racist society who doesn't give a fuck about our indigenous population.

For me, as an indigenous person who is also upper middle class and in one of the most affluent cities in the country, life is pretty good. But the same can't be said for many others who don't share my privilege. And my country is about to tell them, loud and clear, that they don't care. Didn't care 40 years ago, don't care now.

  • Yeah I was in highschool (Aus) and we bought the idea that it was real found footage and a real legend, hook, line and sinker. Excellent marketing.

  • It got a fair bit of criticism but that movie has had a lot of replay in my house. Solid and simple premise, moves quickly. I could do with a little less of the love story but it does make the ending hit a bit harder.

  • So my direction is apt.

  • My (incorrect) memory was that you couldn't fold it more than 7 times.

    Go put on some deodorant.

  • I thought it was 7?

  • Huh, interesting. In my mind an abbreviation was either a truncation or maybe a portmanteau. Didn't think it was an accurate description of acronyms or initialisms.

Also I said 'actually' in my response, please forgive me. I had an upwards lilt in my head voice which would have negated any condescension in person, but on reading what I said, I just came across as a regular, pedant fuckwit.

  • Qantas is actually an acronym

  • My teen and young adult years were just hit and miss attempts combining what our mothers taught us and trying to mimic what we saw on TV. I don't think we looked great, but we didn't really focus on makeup anyway. Obsessively removing most of our eyebrows, yes, but makeup was done as a finishing touch to an outfit.

Nowadays I see barely teenage girls looking immaculately made up. The children of my peers are going to their end of year formals (that's like prom for yanks) and they look 25 and again, immaculate. I can't imagine the pressure to get the products, perfect their use, or the idea that you'd pay a professional to do so.

My teen years predate even YouTube. I'm glad for it honestly. In photos I look like a kid. Not a kid dressed as a woman, years before I was one.

  • When prisoners die due to abuse or neglect post trauma etc in these situations, what always confuses me is that the staff don't check on them purely from a risk mitigation/self preservation perspective.

Like, even if you're a screw who hates a prisoner and subjecting them to harm makes your day, you still -personally- don't want to get in the shit if something goes wrong? Doesn't just avoiding someone dying happening on your watch motivate you to make sure they don't?

  • I think you're busy having an argument with yourself.

  • ... But you brought it up?
