  • You're talking out of your ass. Trans folk, and gender reassignment, have been a thing for decades. It's only recently become a social topic in the wider push for inclusive LGQT+ rights and has been gained mainstream attention, which has conservative undies in a twist. It just used to be that trans people kept themselves to themselves out of fear of social rejection, which is what the wider push has been about.

  • Uh, that varies wildly state to state and person to person here in the US. California even has division among acceptance, there are significant portions of people on LA and SF who'd love to see all these things repealed. Social media is a helluva drug.

  • Electrician here as well, running a shop comes with its own set of shenanigans that I sometimes daydream about just working for someone. But then I remember the flexibility I have that wouldn't be a thing otherwise.

  • My guy and I do 4 10s when we have the workload, and yeah, same deal. 3 day weekends are rad, but like hell if I have energy for anything after work on those other 4 days.

Some days I miss being a one-man show and being able to work just enough jobs to keep my bills paid and food on the table, but I wouldn't be able to take on the more fun jobs by myself.

  • I believe it is mandatory for an aspiring officer to serve a certain length of time as a CO in a prison before they're given a job interacting with the public on the street. This would explain why the most of them are all so neurotic, I would be too if I had to deal with violent offenders all day.

  • Not necessarily, but in my experience with my friends' kids, the ones that are the most maladjusted are the ones with their faces buried in their phones all the time, and these are the same kids that were raised on iPads and YouTube all day. It's one thing to have an hour or two of screen time in a day, but the parents that don't limit it have the kids with the most behavioral problems.

  • While I feel for families that bought over the last few years that really didn't have much choice and will be underwater shortly, my heart goes out to them. That said, my wife and I have been waiting for a market correction to come around and have been diligently saving for just such an occasion, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

It's terrible that we have to go through this nonsense on the whole, especially considering that if PE stayed out of the housing market, there's no reason every family couldn't afford a house if firms weren't driving prices up.

  • Eh since my laptop is primarily for work and running my business, I have two separate base partitions for just such an occasion that I'll mirror across once I know nothing went stupid. I just can't afford to be goofing around procrastinating work, and then bork my system when I need to do invoicing and the like.

  • I live in a ski town, which is a second home market. Houses are surging onto the market right now as people are wanting their capital liquid, and prices are softening quickly as people get desperate to offload these rental houses when absolutely no one wants to buy at the moment. Our vacation rental market reached peak saturation a year or so ago, and now it's a losing battle for many, especially considering we had two bunk winters in a row and owners lost their asses.

I don't expect houses to return anywhere near where they were before COVID, but I'm optimistic they'll become semi affordable in the next year or two. I'm just tired of renting and facing the prospect of moving because a landlord gets a wild hair up their ass.

  • Indeed, I think the entire idea that needs focus is distributing away from a handful of large corps, although I don't see streaming going in that direction largely due to IP rights for content, not necessarily bandwidth and resources. Many streaming platforms as I understand already have their content distributed through CDNs that are geographically dispersed as to ease network load, though they retain control over that hardware. I'm proposing providing more options for your average joe website than on something controlled by the likes of Amazon and Microsoft.
