It's the lack of competition.

Similar to how you see gas stations on opposite sides of the street charge the same price.

There's a gentleman's agreement not to compete on price so everyone can make more money, except the customers.

I think the corruption problem in Ukraine needs to be brought front and center.

Everyone who is corrupt in Ukraine is responsible for keeping them out of NATO and subsequently allowing Russia to invade.

Once it becomes apparent to these people that their corruption is killing them, maybe they'll start holding each other accountable and punishing corruption accordingly.

Because people are idiots.

They don't understand how much even profit can be manipulated. All you need is one guy on payroll making more money than he should, and that's going to reduce your 'profit.' That doesn't mean he isn't profiting, though.

I highly doubt the US government will be in a position to pay out social security when I'm in need of it.
