  • They don’t actually know the final amount, but they do have an independent expectation for certain items.

If your job withholds income tax then it is paid quarterly to the government, so they know how much you made and how much taxes you should be paying.

If you win a large sum of money in the stock market or gambling at a casino then the broker or management company reports a tax bill to the IRS. The same happens for large early withdrawals of retirement funds.

They also know information based on previous returns, like how many kids you have or if you own a home.

They may not know it down to the dollar amount you’ll be paying because of the complexity of the US tax code and the deductions you’ll claim. For example, the government has no record of you purchasing a $600 electric car charger but you can claim that on your taxes to reduce your tax liability. That being said, if you under-report the amount you made at your job they will almost surely audit you if the number reported by your employer doesn’t match the number you provide.

  • That’s a pretty big decision for a 22 year old. I understand your point about it feeling condescending, but I can’t help but feel like the doctor was doing you a massive favor. It may have been an inconvenience but that’s better than the chance of a lifetime of regret.

  • Fun fact, the only way you can claim dependents on your taxes is with a social security number. Some people in the US are exempt from the Social Security system and don’t have a number.

So good luck getting a social security number for a frozen embryo.

  • As an Oregon voter, tough shit. We voted with a 68% majority to amend the state constitution, with explicit penalties for legislative absenteeism.

The chilling impact they are feeling is the will of the people bitch slapping their defunct political strategy.

  • The Chevy Volt PHEV was an absolutely fantastic car, I was very sad the day I sold it and even more sad when GM said they were discontinuing the line. Whoever brings a PHEV truck to the market with 100 miles of all-EV range, I’ll buy it day one.

  • I have a hard time thinking the physical location of Cruz would have saved somebody from freezing to death. As tragic as it is, the man is a politician not a space heater.

I don’t have to defend my appreciation for dark self-deprecating humor.

  • It also exploded after lifting the second stage to its desired speed, plus performed a hot stage, plus reoriented for the back boost burn and re-ignited before it blew up. This was a phenomenally successful flight for the first stage.
