  • They are winning those down ballot elections in places.

  • Biden could solve this problem by making the existing border crossings easier/faster. Last time I was in Mexico it two 3 hours to get back into the US. Border agents could work much faster. Mexicans - like humans everywhere - are mostly nice people. IF congress won't fund more border control then just metrics for how long the line is on the agents "scan the passport, you look like the picture, no red flags in the computer so I need to keep this line moving: NEXT". Just making the legal border crossing easier would make a big difference.

  • When both candidates are too evil to vote for then this is the rational choice. Your vote is counted and so people see it when they look. Many minor parties have gotten everything they want without ever winning - when the vote margin between you and an opponent is just a few percent, attracting those who care enough too vote for a third party makes a loss into a win.

Sure other voting systems give more power to other votes, but you still get power.

  • I've been voting third party for decades now. If enough others do we can make a difference.

    • Gen X.
  • A terminal is something like a DEC model Vt220, or IBM 3270. These are physical machines with a keyboard, and a display. Most often the display was a CRT, but some were just a printer, I supposed some must have had a LCD but I've never seen one. A few did have a mouse, but that was rare. They might look like a computer, but they do not have a CPU (or they do but the CPU is very under powered). The point is you can have 100 cheap (cheap as in 4x the cost of a modern PC, without factoring in inflation) terminals connecting to an expensive powerful computer (expensive as in millions of not inflation adjusted dollars, powerful as in a modern smart phone is faster by nearly any measure). Every terminal had some special commands that programs could use to do something more fancy than plain text, but different ones had different abilities.

These days a powerful PC is cheaper than any terminal could be and vastly more powerful than those old computers, so it doesn't make sense to have one except as a collectors item. However terminals themselves did leave a useful of program design. Most command line programs know how to control a terminal to do some pretty printing. Thus we often use terminal emulators which let our computer pretend to be one of those old terminals. The DEC vt100 for whatever reason ends up being the most commonly emulated terminal when someone says terminal emulator - there really was a model vt100 terminal at one time.

Note that a web browser counts as a terminal emulator by the above definition. Nobody thinks of them that way, but they fit.

  • So what? Just because they don't believe the same things you do does not mean you should treat them poorly.

  • Why do you assume it is the same group? While both are right wing, they do not seem to be the same people. Those who like this generally (at least in my group of friends) do not support Trump or executive power; those who like Trump don't care about this at all. Maybe my group of friends is small, but that is what I see.

  • It works even with 0 and 00 - but only if you have infinite money and there is no limit to bets. So long as there is finite money, or limited bets you will - statistically - hit a run of losses that exceeds your money.

Maximum bets and the fact that money is limited is what breaks this, once you hit the maximum bet odds are slightly against you winning on that next turn because of the 0 and 00; and so eventually you will lose as you hit running up to the max bet and then lose on that turn.

  • Good actuary science needs to figure out people who while they haven't yet had a claim still belong in the ultra high risk group. There are houses all over in hurricane areas that have never been hit in 150 years, while not too far away some other land was hit several times - this is random chance.

  • That is a political problem. Those can be fixed. I don't know how, but they can be fixed.

  • For starters you are supposed to demand better transit. While expensive, there is no reason you can't get great transit to your sub division - and since it is great transit everyone could get rid of a car (not all cars: you keep the SUV to tow the boat!) and save money overall.

  • While sea levels rising may be something that someone 30 years ago didn't predict, most of the other risks were well known 200 years ago.

  • This isn't about safety - those places are safe to live most of the time, and the weather predictions are very good at giving you a week notice to get out before the exceptions.

It is just too expensive to have buildings in those areas. Nobody builds a house that can be moved away from those areas in a week. Thus if you live there you need to account for the costs of rebuilding your house every few years when the weather destroys it. Or you need to build a house that can survive the weather - I don't know how expensive that would be.

I don't care if you want to live in those places, but I do not want to subsidize your housing if you choose to live there. Come move closer to me if you don't like it. (note that there are other risks living close to me)

  • What extreme cold? Is is January, this is not unusual weather - other than maybe unusually warm. Sure it is colder than average, but there is and always has been a large variation that makes up the average, we have seen lower temperatures in the last 10 years.

  • This is clearly about Hamas andithe various reactions to it. Not invoking Hamas is thus trying to hide something.

  • Lat I heard the independence supporters (claimed!) that the votes were not fair and so they stayed home. I'm not really in position to look into it. I'm all in favor of statehood if they want it.

  • What do the people of Samoa want? As an American I want to know what they want, this is the first in my almost 50 year of life I've even heard the idea. (and about the 10th time total I've heard of them at all - they are not often in the news or discussions)

By contrast Puerto Rico I hear of a lot, but so far as I can tell the people the there are divided and so I guess status quo is just as good/bad as everything else - but this is only because they don't agree on what they want, if they did I'd support it.

  • They will escalate no matter what, but the type will be more obvious thanithe others

  • Even before the official end man, towers were retired and so odds were against getting a connection though somecimes you could

  • if the police don't do anything then talk to the mayor. You can also talk to the state legislator.
