  • perhaps by changing the party into something entirely different from within. of course that would require a lot of work to overcome 25 years of institutional inertia, let alone a big job of completely changing the party's strategy and operation.

i would even make the argument that the greens aren't left, since they aren't calling for worker control of the means of production and historically that's been the bare minimum to be considered left but using the french seating chart hundreds of years later has its own issues.

  • we're talking about 2000 because i asked about it to find out exactly how far back your belief that voters bear the responsibility for the us governments actions goes and to which particular voters it applies.

are the nader people more to blame for the recount not taking place than the many people and political actors calling for it to stop?

are the election workers responsible for the failed system they enabled through their work that literally put the wrong person in office?

i'm gonna sound like a broken record here, but:

If I were choosing the vote that makes me least responsible for the genocide in Gaza wouldn’t I choose a candidate who opposes it in both word and deed?

If what you said were true and I really was responsible for the actions of my government through my vote, wouldn’t it make sense to focus on getting voting records from diebold or whatever so you could use that information to target your vitriol at the people most responsible for this nations cruel actions?

If you really believe that people are responsible for the actions of their governments does that extend to the gore voters in Florida?

If people are responsible for the actions of their governments then what justice should be enacted to right the wrongs they bear responsibility for?

  • Gore would have won in Florida if there had been a full recount instead of a partial.

If you really believe that people are responsible for the actions of their governments does that extend to the gore voters in Florida?

  • Yeah badblocks -n /dev/your_target_device launched from a different boot device.

You can’t run it from your install because it’s gonna read every block into memory and then write some crap to it and read it back to make sure the block works then write what was originally there back to it.

It’s really important that you check yourself before you wreck yourself with the badblocks command because you can destroy data if you use the wrong flags.

Another program that fixes that problem is spinrite. It costs money but it’s very useful and has a lot of good documentation.

Each cell in the ssd isn’t a digital “1” or “0” but a charge coupled device that stores a voltage. Over time that potential changes in a way that’s directly proportional to the number of read cycles and age of the data from first write. When it changes enough, the controller has to try to read it many times to get a sane result it can send down the bus.

That results in your ssd seeming slow.

How long does it take to boot though, and what do you expect?

  • Yeah im thinking do “normal” decrypt on boot. It’ll be easier to troubleshoot and recover from if something goes wrong and there’s fewer pitfalls to deal with.

I also suspect that theres a problem with your computer because boot times have been pretty fast for many years now.

E: I just now saw that you’re using an eighth generation intel processor, plenty of ram and an ssd.

I have the same situation but a much older processor and my boot times from button press to desktop are ~10 seconds.

Unless your expectations for boot times are way out of line, you ought to have no problem using decrypt on boot.

One possibility is that your ssd has aged and is having to read those old system file blocks hundreds of times to get it right. Badblocks -n or spinrite level 2 or 3 scan fixes this problem.

  • That’s a hard thing to do for a bunch of reasons. There’s someone else who went into em so I’m not gonna do that.

Unless something’s seriously wrong, it would probably be better to just make your laptop boot faster.

So, what’s your laptop, what kind of disk does it have and how long does it take to boot/login?

  • I’m old enough to have been able to vote in the 2000 election. Is the blood from 600 thousand Iraqis on my hands too?

If I were choosing the vote that makes me least responsible for the genocide in Gaza wouldn’t I choose a candidate who opposes it in both word and deed?

I don’t think you’ve seriously thought what you’re saying through.

  • Just make sure it’s federated with the places that host the communities you wanna be in.

I wouldn’t worry about moderation and operations. If the people you wanna hear from and talk to are there or federated with it you’ll be fine.

  • If you’re comfortable pivoting to ml, there’s a good vegan community on hexbear. World preemptively defederated from that instance though, so you’d need to make an alt or change servers.

  • I will generally not recommend people vote for or support the greens because they represent a directionless triangulation with no vision.

I’ve had the opportunity to vote green in every national election they’ve been in and even chosen them a few times and they’ve always let me down.

  • I’m sorry people are being assholes to you.

If you decide you want to vote for a us political party, PSL is running LaRiva on a platform of Palestinian statehood and an end to arms shipments to Israel.

PSL has its problems, but I think it’s the best response to this moment in America.

  • If your windows software works in a vm or wine then that might be a better choice for you.

The only thing windows will do with to a Linux install anymore is mess up the boot. People still say two separate drives is the optimal choice to prevent this but it really doesn’t save you from anything but fat fingering your own partitions during the install process and if the disks are the same size/interface/manufacturer it doesn’t do much there either.

So as has always been the case since dual booting existed: install windows first, saving the space you want to use for Linux then install whatever you want. Have your distributions preferred method of repairing failed boot on hand so that when something breaks unexpectedly you can fix it. Often it’s more than a boot repair tool, but an entire bootable environment that can be used for all kinds of purposes.

Use uup dump and rufus to make a windows installer and put it on a usb. I specifically recommend rufus as opposed to dd or other normal way of doing things because it has special options regarding windows oobe and requirements that will be invoked on use.

It doesn’t matter if you choose 10 or 11. Both can be had in ltsc channels. Dealers choice, you’re the one with software that needs it!
