  • Wow. Several of the instances described are quite clearly rape; with some horrible scarring and degrading stuff through in; exploiting power-imbalance to make it possible. What I struggle to fully understand though are the text messages mentioned in the story. Gaiman argues that there was consent, and there are things said in those text messages that might support him. But the other circumstances, and the pattern of behaviour across multiple victims surely is enough to overrule that.

  • I assume the primary reason for Valve supporting Linux is to protect themselves against possible hostility from Microsoft. So yeah, it's a business decision to protect Valve's profits; but frankly - it's also beneficial to everyone who isn't Microsoft.

Overall, I'm not a great fan of Steam. (And generally it's me talking down Steam; recommending itch.io and GOG; and sometimes even defending Epic against what I think are unfair attacks.) But here I'm just saying that I don't really see the negative of Valve creating Steam OS. Although I don't intend to use Steam OS, I think I'm already benefiting from the support Valve has given Linux to create Steam OS.

  • I don't really understand this buzz about Steam OS displacing Windows.

Windows is a general purpose computer OS; whereas Steam OS is a game-platform OS designed for the Steam Deck and similar devices. It doesn't seem to be the same use case. Obviously Steam OS could be used as a general purpose OS, if you just switch modes and install this and that software... but then what are you waiting for? There are already heaps of high quality general purpose Linux OSs already designed for that purpose. Linux Mint is a drop-in replacement for Windows, and has no problems whatsoever with games.

I mean, if you want to use Steam OS on your main computer, then that's fine - but I just don't really see a reason to use that rather than something that is already available, and already a desktop OS rather than a console OS.

  • Back when I was on Twitter (a couple of years ago now), all links to Mastodon were explicitly marked as "unsafe", and posts containing such links were demoted. So it's apparently kind of normal for these social media companies to attempt to choke new competition as early as possible.

  • One advantage of Pixelfed is that it not a commercial company. So unlike Instagram, they do not have financial motivation to addict and exploit. So for people who are interested in seeing and sharing picture galleries, that seems like a good option to me.

(Personally I don't use Instagram or Pixelfed, or any other similar service.)

  • Pretty much the same for me. I've seen many posts and comments complaining about those kinds of things from .ml and .world; but close to zero of the actual behaviour that people complain about.

  • Thanks. I do remember this now. I don't remember it costing a lot of money, but I do remember people generally disagreeing with the idea of it - and then being amused by how it was to be implemented. And yes, to get around this filter I changed my DNS server from the ISP's default to instead use Google's. (This was far enough in the past that I wasn't yet anti-google!)

  • Old internet is where different people had different websites, and they'd link together with web-rings. People would explore and discover and share. The old internet was not dominated by mega-corps. There were no facebook accounts and no google accounts. It was just people sharing their ideas and interests - without trying to turn everything into a side-hustle, or data-harvest or anything like that.

  • Yeah, I agree that OP's attitude is unappealing. But it's not like OP is an official spokesperson or ambassador for Linux or anything like that. It's just a person giving their opinion. And in any large group of people there's always going to be some that you don't agree with. (and often they are the loudest most visible ones...)

  • I feel some sadness in seeing Microsoft's slow sludge of enshitification oozing forward and gradually engulfing github. There's still a way to go before it become totally crap, but it is definitely getting worse and will continue to get worse as Microsoft does their best to mine whatever value they can from everyone passing by.

Knowing this, I think it is wise to start looking at alternatives.

  • I've stopped using github because I hate advertising and nags. Probably most people don't care much about it, but for me github nagging and 'reminding' me about copilot is just so off-putting that I immediately want to leave the site. I don't want my attention stolen like that.

  • I'm not so sure. I reckon he's using a Trump-style strategy of just constantly doing and saying outrageous rubbish in order to dominate people's attention. i.e. He just wants people to be paying attention to him, and thinking about him, and writing about him, regardless of whether it is positive or negative.

I believe he is doing this as a deliberate strategy, knowing that even if a lot of the reaction is negative, it still means that he has the attention of the world - and that people will listen to what he is saying.

  • I've found Mojeek to be a bit hit and miss; but one thing I really appreciate is that they actually do the indexing and searching themselves (whereas pretty much every other search site uses Bing or Google behind the scenes). So although Mojeek may not be ideal, they are at least making an effort to be independent.

  • I've thought about this a fair bit, and I can definitely recall a bunch of cases from primary school and high school when I opened up about my feelings and personal stuff; and it ended badly for me. It ended badly every time, and I reckon that's why I basically don't tell anyone anything about myself now as an adult. I don't even share most stuff with my partner, or my family - such are the scars of past experience.

I'm sure this is similar for many people.
