I have never played this game and don't even really know what it is, but wouldn't the obvious solution be to have the abandoned bases get eaten by sandworms?

Optimistic scenario: the Great Depression ends up getting renamed, the way they had to rename the Great War when World War 2 happened.

Pessimistic scenario: Economists are forced to invent a third "-ession" word to describe what's going on.

This is actually one of the most interesting and entertaining timelines.

There was only supposed to be enough source data to make it to 2012- and that was originally a very generous buffer, since a fraction of a percent of Earths last more than 10 years after both networked computers and nuclear weapons have been invented in-simulation.

So, the operators decided not to pull the plug and just let this one run its course.

As it extrapolates history farther and farther outside of the initial parameters, the simulator is cannibalizing itself with feedback and undergoing model collapse.

Would make sense if he is selling recruiting & resume optimizing services or something- but from that job title he's the guy who puts the DRM on the WiFi in the touchscreen toaster oven to ensure it can't toast anymore when the company providing its cloud services goes out of business.

So my theory: that's a very competitive job market and he's looking for work, so he's posting depressing stories in the hopes that it inspires already-depressed unemployed potential competitors in his network to kill themselves. Because each one that does slightly increases his own relative odds of getting hired.
