  • The dates are written to match how it's said. In the US we say our dates as month day year, and before you say "But the 4th of July" my counterpoint is that the 4th of July takes place on July 4th. And Cinco de Mayo takes place on May 5th. And May the Fourth Be With You takes place on May 4th.

  • Considering the history of alphabet orgs performing operations for the benefit of the wealthy few and corporations, I'd imagine they care quite a bit about this, especially considering how many slightly left leaning democracies in South and Central America were toppled by the CIA.

  • Looking at the numbers in 4 of the swing states, Kamala got more total votes in 2024 than Biden did in 2020, but so many rural voters just came out and voted for trump and against Kamal, so much so that in quite a few of the races Kamala lost but democrats in congress won their races, despite both running on functionally identical platforms.

Sure Dems generally care less and suck because they don't actually wield power when they have it but at least they're not actively trying to kill the minority populations and drag us into a theocratic oligarchy to fulfill the Book of Revelations prophesies.

I'd fucking love it if both political parties were trying to best represent their constituents. But they aren't, and opining for something that doesn't exist and has never existed isn't going to do us any good. We work with the tools we have and the people we can to make the best of a shit situation. It that means backing dems because they're not actively trying to kill minorities I'm gonna go with that on election day and do what I can to mitigate other kinds of damages.

  • It's a moment of catharsis, its that drop of blood against a psychopathic group of people using their power and control to decide whether we get to live or die and mostly choose to let us die.

At this point it feels like we're in general are mostly out of options. Legislation hasn't worked the ACA didn't address the power health insurance companies have over us, voting with our wallet doesn't work on an inelastic industry where every single person needs health care, the courts are bought out by these wealthy psychos.

Either we just live with the current and keep dying unnecessarily or we use the last box of civic engagement.

  • life-altering drugs

    Such as...

HRT is already basically never prescribed to prepubescent and early pubescent children, puberty blockers have been used for cisgendered children entering puberty too early for decades and is perfectly safe for them to take with few to no truly major life altering impacts. Trans minors under 18 already can't get gender affirming surgery as laid out in the DSM-V.

Be precise and descriptive in your language when arguing, nobody has the time or energy to cover every possibility when you vaguely allude to a number of potential talking points as a bullshit gotcha for the person who actually decided to engage with your bullshit in good faith.

  • Ouch. I must have gotten pretty lucky with my Note 20 5G, my battery lasts pretty decently under normal daily use.

Used to have a Note 8 for about 6-7 years, was a good phone until the very end when the battery started to go.

  • I never said the kid should have actually gone over and given any kind of first aid, but he should still be taught basic first aid if his parents are teaching him how to use a gun.

It's still psychopathic to mock someone who you just shot.

  • I don't expect a kid to do much of anything after shooting a person, intruder or not, not mock them for being in pain of a literal bullet wound.

Granted if the parents taught him how to use a firearm they should also have taught him how to use a medical pack because accidents can and do happen with firearms and he should be able to patch up himself or someone else if an accident does happen.

  • "Refuting an argument different from the one actually under discussion, while not recognizing or acknowledging the distinction" is exactly what the other poster did. My "that's not how reality works" was the next step after "if people spontaneously see how I see voting they'd vote third party too" my argument referring to how people don't just spontaneously change their mind and vote third party en masse.

Instead they retorted with some vague nebulous "people know how reality works" implying that people know The System(tm) is corrupt and flawed, which sure they get the instinct it is but don't actually know why or how it is corrupt and flawed. Which is not what I was talking about. It doesn't actually refute my point or the description of the exact conversation I've had dozens of times. It pretty much always goes the same way, as I described it.

First Past the Post always leads to 2 dominant parties, the last time in us history there was a 3rd party that won one party died and another party split itself in 2. Those conditions are what is most likely to get a third party in the US, and any amount of wishful thinking about the populace suddenly wishing up and just voting 3rd party is delusional magical thinking at best.

There isn't much more textbook of an example of a strawman you can get in the wild.

  • There's definitely some heritage fetishism in the US especially around various holidays Americans associate with different cultures, but like OP said, the US is a relatively new and young nation in the grand scheme nations. Our national mythology is all about the different immigrants that came here and left their mark on the culture. As immigrants came over most of us had to hold onto the old country ties and connections, it's why so many cities have a Chinatown or a Little Italy, and these places took traditions we had from the home country and adapted them to what was available.

We all have a general implicit understanding that were all Americans, but the lineage we trace our families back to is why we say "I'm (Heritage XYZ)"

As for a lot of the really weird stuff especially around holidays (Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick's day, etc) that's mainly just an excuse to get drunk and party and is definitely pushed on by the entertainment and hospitality industries to make more money.
