  • Man it's almost like we had a specific military doctrine where nobody wanted to pull the trigger on launching nukes and risk immediate nuclear retaliation, destroying everything. We could call it Everyone Definitely Dies.

  • That's a huge part of it, but being equipped with knowledge still makes a pretty big difference, making something like an Aglio e Olio is going to be quite a bit healthier comparatively than a can of chef boyardee overloaded with sugar and salt and for a minimally longer time investment.

  • Woke has previously meant "aware of social injustices" now the chuds use it as "anything they don't like and is vaguely progressive or representative of anyone not cis, het, white, or a dude"

  • So I think there's a bit of crossing of wires (pun maybe intended) when it comes understanding both concepts. For water a valve acts as a door, open doors let things through, closed doors block things from moving.

For circuits, I believe closed comes from a more mathematical thing where closed more means without holes/gaps. So the circuit is open when there is a gap in the circuit as a whole.

I think the real confusion occurs when in high school physics classes there is a segment about flowing water in preparation for the next chapter on electricity and circuits.

  • Ahh the Socratic Method. One of the most effective means of teaching is playung just dumb enough, asking the right questions and getting them to provide some evidence. Make them convince you of their point of view and just keep pointing out the flaws once they start making contradictions.

  • It something that always has been. Ben Franklin's Poor Richard An Almanack from 1739 uses title case. It was used in illuminated manuscripts written by monks

You're asking something that probably comes from a wide array of reasons that dates back literal centuries, even millennia.

  • Hey if that's your jam go for it, personally I'd like to live in a world where someone can elect to do that sort of work and not have to worry and stress about housing, food, bills etc or take on that kind of work despite hating it in order to put food on the table.

  • This is still valid within the "use it as a last resort" framework. That doesn't mean don't use it, it just means think through the ramifications of using it before you do use it. If the admin comes to the conclusion that nothing else can be done, then defederate.

  • While defederation is a valid tool, it's also shouldn't be the first choice if there is friction between instances. Instance Admins should talk to each other see if the problem can be resolved through various means, if not then defederation becomes a more reasonable option.

  • If needing to pay for basic necessities weren't a factor in people getting jobs, I highly doubt the majority of people would work the kinds of jobs of today. I don't know a single person who is excited to go into their retail job and deal with shitty customers all day or sit in a bland cubicle all day making spreadsheets that nobody really cares about.

I know more people who would much rather devote their time to learning and playing instruments, or making something with their own hands, or writing stories, or spending time raising their families.

  • I have convos like thar with my parents all the time. Like with Student Debt Forgiveness, they recognize its a problem, they get that its preventing people from buying homes and thar jobs are paying shit, but the glaringly obvious solution of forgiving that debt is just too radically left for them and they worked so hard to keep me from taking on big student loans.

They're stuck in the far right-centrist right dichotomy of the Oberton window in the US, and just can't take that step beyond the bounds of ideas outside the comparatively narrow views in America. My parents aren't also Fox News watchers, the primarily stick to CNN so they're not stuck in some absurd false reality but they're still stuck in a pro capitalist framework.

  • Would have 12 years in August here. There's some fandom-centric communities that I miss from my old reddit sub list, but honestly I'm thoroughly enjoying lemmy. I mostly stuck to the official app and the desktop old reddit before dropping it for lemmy, It's so damn nice not seeing He Gets Us ads or casino ads like every 4-5 posts. I left reddit just about when they announced the API cost changes and was like, welp that's going to kill everything. I got an email about Lemmy SDF because of my Mastodon and basically said hey might as well jump ship now and check this thing out.

  • Eh people have been making the complaint that (insert new technology here) is ruining thenyout and making them less intelligent for milennia. Socrates complained that writing things down made people dumber because they don't memorize their studies, people complained about the evils of printed books causing reading hysteria after the Guttenberg press was invented and seeing wider adoption, the radio was hogging kids attention away from their studies, television was interrupting family conversation time, the telephone was distracting teenagers from some other bs excuse, it's complaints about new technology all the way down.

All these new technologies did in the past was change how we interact and required new kinds of skills and intelligence to use. It takes a different kind of knowhow to make a good tiktok than it does to write a good book.

Now if we want to talk about misuse of algorithmic suggestion and how that shapes thought, then absolutely, but that's not an evil inherent to the technology, that's people with power uing the tools they have at their disposal to harm others. People use books to spread bad messages, people use radio to spread bad ideology, people use television to harm and divide others.
