  • Nintendo consoles have always come in pairs of two. Revolutionary new concept and solidified iteration. So the really interesting console will be whatever comes next in 5-10 years.

  • Yeah, it solves absolutely nothing. Instead of my own server storing too many pictures I would have to pay for a second server to store too many pictures.

  • You can, but what would that solve?

  • Too much.

The pgsql database is about 2 GB compressed, but it shares that with Nextcloud and I can't be bothered disentangling that right now.

But the picture storage takes the cake. I've disabled proxying images of other posts and pruned those that were proxied until then. I think. But still it takes up multiple GBs. I post many memes but not nearly enough to explain that. And because it puts all the images into a billion subdirectories it takes ages to even calculate how much storage is used. Dunno if it will be done by the time I'm done writing this post.

The picture storage is a huge black box. No idea what it's doing all the time. I can't shake the feeling that there must be better programs to handle pictures.

Performance is a big problem as well. I've only got hdds and all the constant synchronisation is hammering the database like crazy. Loading my own profile usually takes 2 or 3 tries.

Edit: It's the next morning and my pictures take up 25 GB.

  • I used the official documentation.

  • Yeah, it was trying to make a connection to some online service and got stuck there. No idea why. DRM sucks. I'm glad we got the GOG version now.

  • But without all the other admins I wouldn't have anyone to talk to. And they test out all the updates for me.

  • And they like entering the funny hostnames of their PCs to play via LAN.

  • I'm speaking of the predecessor. Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. That's the second time now someone on Lemmy forgot it existed.

It was awesome. It had sprawling levels seldom seen nowadays. It really let you feel the scale of places. And in contrast to JO and JA the lightsaber would actually properly illuminate an area.

  • I'm reminded of Jedi Knight. You could easily die by running into a wall with force speed. It was glorious.

  • Well, that's just your own fault for being shit at identifying cheeses.

  • In Germany the title was simply "Mein Vater ist ein Außerirdischer" - "My Father is an Extraterrestrial". Much easier to remember. I still forgot it.

  • I don't have a Switch, but back with the Wii I got one despite being a big PC gamer because its games were so different from the PC, PS or Xbox games.

And the Switch 2 will probably sell as many consoles in the first week as the Deck did in its entire lifetime. They're just not in the same league.

But the Switch 2 will very probably also not nearly sell as much as the Switch 1. But Nintendo probably already know that. The next generation will be the interesting console. Who knows what they will come up with. Maybe they'll manage to somehow make VR more accessible.

Edit: And I'm answering to a 3 day old comment...

  • I'm still waiting for prices to fall below 10 € per TB. Lost a 4 TB drive prematurely in the 2010s. I thought I could just wait a bit until 8 TB drives cost the same. You know, the same kind of price drops HDDs have always had about every 2 years or so. Then a flood or an earthquake or both happened and destroyed some factories and prices shot up and never recovered.

  • Feeling really gellical.

  • Reminds me of my last time at the Chaos Communication Congress where suddelny Wikipedia was throwing SSL errors. Back then they also had a projector set up to display people's passwords they had gathered. Now I'm curious if they still do that. Probably.
