I understand e-cigarettes are supposed to help you quit
They're not.
An e-cigarette is just like a normal cigarette, but you're not inhaling burned paper. If you were inhaling addictive substances with normal cigarettes, nothing is stopping you from doing the same with an e-cig.
Do they work? In the sense that they "burn" (in quotes) substances and let you inhale them, then yes. That is their purpose.
90 accidents a year is a LOT, if you stop to think that there are like only a few dozens of them out there, versus more than a hundred million human drivers.
I don’t see the point in refusing to use Mastodon instances that federate with Threads. There are no suggestion algorithms in Mastodon, you mostly only see posts from people you follow. You can just… not follow people from Threads. No need to throw a tantrum about it.
Your posts are only public if you set your profile to public. Otherwise, they're private. But even if they're public, I'm pretty sure an instance can make them almost private (as in: you can only see the data if you're federating with them).
I agree that most of the instances don't make things private at the moment (I think), but at least they can protect your information if they want to.
But anyway, federating or not, Meta and other companies are already tracking everyone one way or another.
Because we were talking about how to save that information without using cookies. Setting a cookie would break the one thing that the conversation was about, wouldn't it?
If we're in a fun conversation about how to enter your home without using the door, would you be the one saying "I have an idea, I have an idea: use the door"?
Even if you are a private citizen, it doesn't matter. Informations on everyone's private jets are public information, no matter how "public" of a citizen the owner of the jet is.
And that's how they win. They make everyone else think there's no concern.
"It's only group X". And then later "it's only groups X and Y", there's still no concern. And then "it's only groups X, Y and Z, we can still outvote them..."
It’s the US. If there is a country that hates its citizens more than this one, I haven’t heard of it yet.
Any time they can take things from you and give it to companies, they will.
So it shouldn’t really be a surprise.
But if you forget to pay $1 to a company, all hell breaks loose.
