Why? Cars are more inefficient than nearly every other mode of transport, whether we're talking energy efficiency, space efficiency or cost efficiency. Only air travel is worse. But those modes make up for that in some circumstances by being fast, convenient and flexible.

One train transports 100s of people, the driver is a fairly low proportion of the cost. And there's other members of staff that are required even in a fully automated system. (network monitoring, security). Removing the driver is a nice step, but it doesn't fundamentally change the economics of rail transport. If a route is uneconomic, that's going to be the case without a driver too.

Disagree on noise. Electric cars are quieter when going slowly and the main noise is engine, but louder when going fast and the main noise is tires.

Nobody's expecting these to be used, it's some quota where they have to build X number of kms of bike lane so the politicians can placate us and hope nobody notices.

It's OK to go into debt over a depreciating asset if you can afford to default on the loan, and it substantially improves your ability to make money. Businesses do it all the time. If a sole trader could work better with the cybertruck for some reason(I've got nothing) and could borrow off their house as collateral, that's a financially savvy business decision.

But a lot of people fall victim to predatory marketing. We need to recognize that it's not just them being dumb, they were manipulated, tricked and lied to by a powerful machine.

The same thing is true here. A novice shouldn't be hosting their own instance, heck a experienced user shouldn't host their own instance unless they want a hobby.

Because it matters to the end user that all the instances are cross compatible, that's the federated part. When I first heard of Lemmy and Mastadon as "self hosted social media", I assumed that all the instances were isolated, and dismissed it as pointless. Once I learned what federation was, possibly through the email analogy, I was instantly onboard.

We're not at a stage where you can make full use of these platforms without having a basic understanding of how they work. A disinterested idiot is going to go " WTF is an instance, why is [whatever instance they landed on] so empty" and give up. The email analogy is useful for the interested skeptic and they're the people that are most likely to stick around.

In this thread the email analogy has been criticized for being not technically accurate enough and too technically accurate. That suggests it's about right.

Maybe I'm optimistic here, but I feel like most users of email and Facebook understand that you can send email from Gmail to Outlook and that those are different services, but you can't send a Facebook(message? story? idk I don't use Facebook) to a Twitter user.

I can't think of a better way to explain that activitypub is an open and cross-compatible protocol. The only other big cross-compatible protocol is the web(HTML etc), but that's hopeless, half of people don't seem to understand what a browser is.

Email is the only federated social platform that every normal person is familiar with. It doesn't matter that the technical specifications are completely different. The metaphor goes as far as "in the fediverse anyone signed up with any instance can communicate with anyone on any other instance, like email". For that purpose, it's a good metaphor.

That's certainly one cause, but culture is as well. The American dream of a quarter acre in the quiet leafy suburbs, easy commute to work by car on the freeway, has been a pervasive part of culture for a long time. It's only recently that we've started appreciating the unsustainable reality of that idea.

But isn't that the whole point. The working class becomes the new rich class. That sounds like equal distribution of wealth.

This comment is so depressing. The comic isn't about politics, it's just pointing out that human nature is irrational and we're influenced by how a message is delivered as well as the raw facts. Yet you have to find a political bias in it. Would you feel more positively about the comic if you knew that the author was on "your side"? (Which I'm guessing is the left)

Absolutely, there's lots of possibilities. But I don't think that negates the point that the most sensible approach to any unknown situation is to be cautious and lie low until you fully understand the situation.

Of course, flawed as we are, we're not doing that, as we aren't responding to other potential existential threats.

The best estimates of how many intelligent civilizations there should be suggest that the galaxy should be teeming with them. If any of them evolved mere millions of years before we did, given our pace of technological improvement they should have figured out interstellar travel by now, and they should be broadcasting communication across the galaxy like we're doing. Yet we've detected nothing. Why?

A possible explanation is that an advanced civilization is exterminating all other civilizations, perhaps to avoid competition. It seems like a sensible approach to lie low until we can figure this out, just in case.

Any digital image is actually red green and blue, those are the colors of the pixels on your monitor. When there's enough of them your brain is tricked into seeing other colors. To get even more meta, all colors are just made up by your brain.

So I don't understand your distinction between black and white, and grayscale. Whether it's a gray made of black and white pixels or a "pure gray" doesn't matter, it can look the same. Unless it's a style where the pixels are supposed to be visible, e.g. pointillism.
