The thumb is thicker than other digits so naturally it'll be harder to accept. A lubricant may help but the key is to relax and go slow.

I have a portable one too and it's not exactly what I'd call discreet but sure gets the job done. Honestly can't recommend it for travel though because in spite of the "portable" label, it's terribly bulky and causes me no end of grief when trying to take it on an airplane. I'd read that book/watch that movie/whatever that whatever. One of those unlikely friends stories where they end up working together and learn some kind of life lesson along the way.
