  • Most of what I see are bad actors or just shit people posting from other instances onto beehaw. I think a lot don't realize that this is beehaw and just see the community labeled "news" or "gaming" and assume it's a regular old community.

  • Plus a lot of companies seem to think that customers prefer to witness workers "seem busy" as opposed to them actually being busy. I do deliveries for a restaurant, and there is a lot of downtime between 1 pm - 3 pm and 8 pm - 10 pm because people just aren't ordering food at those times, so management usually makes us do pointless busy work. A lot of our busy work does have a point when the store itself is busy, but it would be really nice to just sit around and chat when we have nothing going on.

I remember I used to work at a grocery store and we had the same problem. After about 9 pm we usually only had the night shift people, with a minor rush at 11 pm or so, and our store closed at 1 am, so a lot of that time was just spent sitting around chatting. If you were a stocker you were probably busy, but us cashiers had nothing to do. Management seemed to think this was a horrible thing so instead they made us "look busy" by literally telling us to act like we were cleaning things.

I have had the rare few customers get mad at me in service jobs for not "working" when I was "supposed to be," but I feel like deep down nobody really gives a shit. As a customer myself I much prefer somebody doing things timely and in a friendly manner than them just looking like a busy bee.

  • Plus it ends up being a lot more than a video game machine, especially for people who don't have smart TVs or a roku stick or anything. My parents use the Xbox more for Netflix than for anything else.

  • Yep that's why I wrote the whole second part of my comment thanks

  • Not a single mention of discord despite it being a haven for neurodivergent people... I know the article is mainly about forums but IRC-style chats are very very closely related to forums.

  • Where I live I rarely see people against vaping for anti smoking usage. Mostly people I meet are against the recreational use.

  • I'm not stupid. You're referencing ostriches "burying their head in the sand," typically used to mean somebody is willfully ignoring things. If you seriously think that's what I'm trying to get across after all I've written about it, then I just cannot help you understand.

  • I definitely recommend looking into OP's position on dead civilians, from their past comment history.

I don't want to take a side in this but I just find those comments thoroughly reprehensible.

  • Maybe we're just seeing different posts? There's one on c/world news right now where the OP is arguing with everybody who disagrees in pretty bad faith. Am I just seeing that because I'm on Jerboa? It's still posted on beehaw from what I can tell

  • I disagree, most of the longer discussions I saw were mostly two people talking past each other.

  • I want people to be nice, which is the foundational rule of the instance.

I simply don't think that this particular topic is helping people do that

  • The travesty is how many people are unable to say this out loud. Everyone is stuck in their black & white tribalism, making them blind for their own sides atrocities.

Personally I don't want to say it out loud because I'm just so mentally exhausted from the screaming. I know (like know, not just feel) that if I say this out loud in a more public space then somebody is gonna scream at me over it. And I just don't want that anymore. I feel in this instance it's better to just keep silent because I just hate it when people get so uppity at me over this kind of thing.

  • university / college student focused. just something for tertiary education

  • Yeah, a lot of people have tried. The issue is really just from a cost perspective and the town council has repeatedly said they won't be fixing anything here due to it being cost prohibitive. The freeway is one of the busiest in the country (although our section isn't too bad) so shutting down an exit or entrance or even an overpass would be bad for business.

It really all just stems from this street formerly being very rural, like you only got off the freeway here to go to 1 other town 20 miles away, or a government agriculture facility. Now there's a mall, Walmart, grocery stores, a few strip malls... Etc., so it didn't matter that the road design was trashy even by 1970s standards when only 50 people used it a day

20 years ago the average resident here probably would've never gone here. Now people commute here.

  • You're kind of right about the freeway being "as slow as a roundabout" but the third crossing is the worst because it's a slip road without a yield sign, so you have to rely on drivers actually looking at you and stopping for you. Fortunately traffic here is so bad that the stop light ahead usually results in cars being stuck all the way on the freeway, allowing you to cross between them. There is a crossing light for pedestrians but only pedestrians can see it, like one of the ✋ signals youd see in a city. The cars have no awareness on whether you're "allowed" to cross.

The slip road is made especially worse by being quite smooth and straight so instead of going the speed suggested by the signs (20 mph), most drivers go 40 or even 50 down the ramp before stopping or going for the stop light.

This is also true if you intend to stop there and cross the road to go south because there's no sidewalk on your side of the road. The second crossing is another freeway slip road. This one does have a yield sign but you still have to rely solely on drivers seeing you and actually caring enough to stop, which isn't great considering it's a semi-blind corner and they're already speeding up to go highway speeds.
