  • interesting take on the accents - never thought of it that way but it's similar in other European countries. if you go to college here, you're mostly confronted with "high german", and are looked down upon if you talk in your regional accent, which is considered courtesy of the poor and working class. i'm somewhat well educated but i refuse to belong to the self-proclaimed "elite", nothing wrong with being smart AND being yourself...

  • i'd guess it's because you can quit anytime. whenever they change the contract, you could walk away, it's not like you're forced to pay until the end of the year or something like my gym membership.

not defending the practice, but i think that's the legal reasoning

  • debrid is basically "cloud torrenting", a server torrents the files and you download them from there. extremely useful if you live in a jurisdiction where p2p filesharing is illegal.

stremio is a netflix-like video player app, torrentio an addon that let's you crawl torrent sites and stream stuff via debrid.

  • as someone who has played around with offline speech recognition before - there is a reason why ai assistants only use it for the wake word, and the rest is processed in the cloud: it sucks. it's quite unreliable, you'd have to pronounce things exactly as expected. so you need to "train" it for different accents and ways to pronounce something if you want to capture it properly, so the info they could siphon this way is imho limited to a couple thousand words. which is considerable already, and would allow for proper profiling, but couldn't capture your interest in something more specific like a mazda 323f.

but offline speech recognition also requires a fair amount of compute power. at least on our phones, it would inevitably drain the battery

  • another strong "yes" from me. my wired headset has much better speech quality than bluetooth ones. i didn't upgrade my phone since the new Pixels dropped the headphone jack, instead i fixed the screen and battery and keep it another couple of years

  • search for "linux fix bad bit", from my experience with raspberry pis i think this happens if you don't power off the device properly. if this happens more often, it's usually a sign that the hdd is damaged and will give in soon

  • yes it looks like a con that's common on twitter - "omg if my boyfriend would get me this for Christmas, i'd marry him" and then a link to an overpriced item on etsy or similar, that you can get off aliexpress or even amazon for cheap.

same here, found the exact same product on aliexpress for half the price
