Reddit seems like it is largely made up of two main demographics. It's either people in their 30's, 40's, 50's who were there since the site's launch (me) or teenagers to early/mid 20's. The latter has a big reach on the site right now.
I would recommend going to the 'communities' tab and sorting by 'local'. Then go through the list and get to know the communities already hosted on this instance (server). I'm still pretty new myself but I have already seen more than a handful of threads about this drama or that drama coming off of other servers. If you think you are going to stick to this one, get to know the community here first and then go exploring communities on other servers.
I go on Reddit for one sub and one sub only. Other than that, I don't care about the site. Notifications are blocked and I've hidden my bookmarks from myself.
