  • The best moment of this best moment is the split second where he reads his line off of the prompt, cannot believe what he is about to say, and then goes ahead and says it in the best way humanly possible. And that’s the take they used.

  • Many or all of them are things they’d do anyway (work on leaks that lead to fires) and/or are already visibly being worked on (the launch pad bidet). Formalizing the list so each thing can be checked off is part of the process to get the launch license back.

  • From the notice:

    Friday, September 8, 2023

The FAA has closed the SpaceX Starship Super Heavy mishap investigation. The final report cites multiple root causes of the April 20, 2023, mishap and 63 corrective actions SpaceX must take to prevent mishap reoccurrence. Corrective actions include redesigns of vehicle hardware to prevent leaks and fires, redesign of the launch pad to increase its robustness, incorporation of additional reviews in the design process, additional analysis and testing of safety critical systems and components including the Autonomous Flight Safety System, and the application of additional change control practices.

The closure of the mishap investigation does not signal an immediate resumption of Starship launches at Boca Chica. SpaceX must implement all corrective actions that impact public safety and apply for and receive a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety, environmental and other applicable regulatory requirements prior to the next Starship launch.

  • Any free weather data is either being subsided by the cost of the device or harvesting your location data for ad surveillance purposes. Paying for carrot means the developer gets to put food on the table without telling ad networks wherever you are.

  • I know you’re trying to help, but do you understand how much negative comments like this tend to stick in a person’s brain? They’re doing their best, and although you intended to be helpful, your intention doesn’t matter much if the outcome is that they feel crappy.

  • They are cooled by liquid helium, but also have a liquid nitrogen outer dewar as well with a vacuum insulator in between. The N2 takes the brunt of the ambient heat so you don’t have to top off the (much more expensive) helium as often.

  • Yep. My little Field Notes books don’t send me notifications about emails, and I can toss them around without breaking them. And use a lot of notation and drawing methods that are very slow when typing with my thumbs.

  • I don’t agree that this is the real deal. The effects were barely visible, and only in a subset of the patient group. Lilly will certainly make a ton of money pushing this on desperate family members of regressing loved ones, though. And there’s no way every single older person is going to get tested for amyloid buildup and take this for years before symptoms start.

And that’s not even considering the issue of whether amyloid buildup is a cause or effect of the disease. Given how poorly anti-amyloid therapies have been actually working in the clinic, I think it’s an effect. But a lot of powerful people have bet their careers on the amyloid hypothesis and it’s hard to turn that big of a ship around.

  • I purchased a wood burning tool (like this one) and use it to “weld” the seams, then do some sanding. It’s a lot more post-processing than is typical for 3D printing but if you want something that looks nice, it’s hard to beat.
