  • Ah yes, the epidemic of van killings we all suffer from.

No one claims gun restrictions are going to stop every last murder.

And if folks were killing each other with Vans several times a week, you can bet there would be some Van Control legislation passed in a hot minute.

  • Considering the same group of people who fights gun control legislation tooth and nail is also very much responsible for the lack of mental health services (and general sorry state of health care) in our country, it sounds to me like you don't really want to solve the gun problem nor the mental health problem you predictably deflect to.

And yes, I'm assuming you are a Republican. If you aren't, try not acting like one and folks won't make that mistake.

R won't support restrictions on gun ownership because they say the problem is mental health, but they won't support spending on mental health either. (Most likely because they seem to oppose anything that would actually help people who suffer.)

Reagan undercuts funding on mental health, resulting in the closure of mental health institutions nationwide:

This last one is a ddg search - you can just pick which article you want to read about Republicans voting against mental health funding.

  • Ah right, the hundreds of fertilizer bomb attacks we have every year.

As if it wouldn't become a lot harder to buy fertilizer in days if that were the case.

(No I didn't miss the McVeigh reference, I just found it to be a ridiculous false equivalence.)

And if folks were running into crowds with trucks twice a week, we'd see some new restrictions there also.

  • I would like to point out that Reagan dismantled funding for our mental health system and was responsible for the closing of many mental health treatment centers, and Republicans have (to my knowledge) voted against every effort to resurrect it.

They won't support restrictions on gun ownership because they say the problem is mental health, but they won't support spending on mental health either. (Most likely because they seem to oppose anything that would actually help people who suffer.)

  • Don't worry, you've underlined his hypocrisy, not given him credit.

  • No problem that merits legislating against it (looks at title of OP) and certainly no problem that merits it being such a focus of the right-wing culture wars.

No problem if you don't feel like being rightfully labeled a bigot is a problem.

I say as I've said repeatedly - no problem you or anyone else has is caused by someone wanting to be called they. The only problem that exists is the inability of the right to live and let live. (As is true of many other topics.)

  • So, no actual problem.

(You are of course, welcome to think whatever you want. I'd be in big trouble every time I was behind someone with a Trump sticker on their car if this wasn't the case.)

  • Because they’re totally different uses of gender-neutral language

OK, let's go with that. Can you please help me understand what problem is created for you by someone being non-binary and wishing to be referred to as they?

I understand that problem #1 is you are being asked to be respectful to someone you disagree with, but if we can get past that...?

  • Ah, willful ignorance. Core tenet of conservative viewpoints in all their forms.

  • Not one problem in your life is the result of a person you know (or even a person you don't know) wanting to be referred to as 'they.'

    Not one.

Edit: LOL of course it was JasSmith@kbin.social - so I guess you do have some problem that someone else's pronouns have caused for you?

  • So a small group of a minority would be…

I think you are expecting too much from him.

  • None of your problems in life are the result of a person you know (or even a person you don't know) wanting to be referred to as 'they.'

    NONE.

  • The fact that his victims were better people than he is shouldn't impact sentencing. We already knew that before he got to trial.

“I know how valuable those grandpa years are,” Dunn said after reading his letter to the judge. “I assure the court we can live in peace as neighbors. Someone must take the first step toward peace.”

That's truly heartwarming. Until you realize he's just ensured Emanuel can just get a few more years of reinforcing for his grandkids how worthless those nrs are, really cementing the next generation of racist bigots.

Prior to the attack in September 2022, Emanuel shouted racial slurs at the group from his white Ford F-250, and demanded that the men leave the area, court records show.

After Dunn responded they were parked on a public road, Emanuel sped off only to return minutes later — his truck charging toward the group. Dunn’s son, Frederick Douglas Dunn, leaped into the grass, saving himself by mere inches.

How wonderful that we're respecting the need for this racist, murderous, bigot's family to continue receiving his influence for as long as possible.

  • One of us, one of us!

Maybe I have different friends than some of the rest of Gen X (which I say because I've seen articles that would tend to contradict what I'm about to suggest) but I feel generationally we've always had a sense that it wouldn't be a great idea to peek behind the curtain - maybe because most of us were raised on morals and norms our boomer parents learned in the 50s, but grew up in a time where many of those "values" were being openly rejected and the world was rapidly changing.

Looking at my friends, my wife, me - once getting that peek, at whatever time in our lives we got it - we flipped immediately to "wow the system truly is shit" in a way I've not seen much of from folks older than us. I had friends who got that message in their teens - took me a bit longer, but I'm here now.

Metaphorically, I'm ready to see this shit burned down. Let the Republicans continue to implode, let the far right show their asses over and over and over so people can no longer pretend that element was effectively eliminated in the 60s.

Hell, let corporatist boomer Dems show their asses a bit more before they finally retire and age out of our legislative bodies, so we start seeing more like Fetterman, Abrams etc. (Not you Bernie Dear, you are the boomer that needs to live forever and keep getting elected so you can show them the way.)

I want to see policies that are designed to help the lower and middle class, that don't treat the poor or incarcerated like subhumans, and empower us all to better our lives. I want politicians who recognize that doing so makes the entire country stronger and better. Dems may never give us that, but Republicans absolutely never will. It's clear they are the party of racism, sexism, corporate welfare, and regression.

Sorry for my screed. It's early in the day and it just wanted to come out.

  • I'll assume you know more about this than I do despite the lack of any citation.

I refuse to believe there's an ethically acceptable business justification for this ridiculous markup.

The entire healthcare industry in the US is built on a foundation of corporate greed. This is just one obvious example.

  • I generally never believe a product is worth what apple is charging.

However, I also expect that the spin and salesmanship required to sell a five dollar cable as a 140 dollar cable is beyond even what Apple is willing to do. So I agree 100% it would have been much more interesting to see it compared against say a 40-80 dollar cable.
