  • They do still exist, I have a specific but popular vehicle, and there's a dedicated forum style site directly from 2011.

In a perfect world, that would be folded into the "fediverse" protocols, but like they're already paying their own hosting etc. In the end that's all reddit did: absorb some nominal hosting and IT for exposure. It made sense for hype niche communities, which is how reddit grew, but now that they're killing control of the communities... Well.. It turns out people were willing to pay for those servers back when they were expensive...

  • American not Canadian. Grew up in a border town and live farther away now. I routinely tell people "I get home sick for a country I'm not from". I hate this shit. I'm not going to rattle off every little trite thing, but damnit, this shit kills me. If there is a silver lining, it's that I've had concerns about our disease spreading. I'm hoping maybe we served as your inoculation.

  • For anyone in that spot of being savvy-ish but having fellow users that finally got used to plex:

A work around is Xteve and owncast. I was successfully able to make an owncast broadcast into a "DVR channel".

Its cluegy but it does work. My tech level in this stuff is spotty. I'm used to stacks of tech but more for physical control systems (NOT consumer facing). But I was able to get that to work.

Edit: little bit of clarification: Xteve will let you add DVR to your plex server. It's possible to tie owncast into Xteve. That allows users to cue into a "DVR" channel which is kind of "simulcasting" whatever you're pointing owncast to. In my case it was a screen share of sportsball, but it could be whatever.

  • this is fantastic, I'm really excited. I do have a follow up on non-hardware integrations though. I know when I download anything on my phone, it's sharing all sorts of crap. Does HA allow integrations to do that? Going back to spotify example, I understand spotify can obviously track things on their end (what song they're giving me etc), but integrations don't let them see humidity in my basement right?

  • This is PERFECT. Thank you. I need figure out Tailscale, I'm much better at the device level than networking, but your answers gave me what I'm looking for: Keep an eye on the device and how it's used and it's workable. Thank you!

  • I have some computer memory I'm still learning the the right terms to describe. It's a criss-cross of wires with spinning ferro magnetic beads. I also know it's not only volatile (the information gone on power down) but destructive (information gone on read). It's about the foot print of an index card, with a ton of connections on every side, maybe 1.5-2cm thick.

Neat little bit of how it used to be.

  • Speaking from personal experience, you might be surprised at just how far up the economic ladder medicare goes. Not billionaires, but certainly millionaires. Why spend money on dumb doctors when YOUR'RE obviously healthy as an ox. YOU'RE never going to get sick. YOU are a demi-god in their prime. It's like when people complain about COBRA being it expensive. It was always that expensive, you're just paying it now. There are a lot of people with multiple homes financial advisors' include medicare as part of that planning.

  • I tried to get a photo in front of the gate with a donught. Apparently it's just not a very popular pastry in Germany, or at least it wasn't at the time (not suprised given what I ate there... Don't know why you'd settle). IIRC even the dunkins nearby didn't have one.

  • I'm done with this, but no, there was not. I respect and acknowledge anyone choosing a protest, I really do. I'm a registered libertarian for gods sakes. There we two choices, one was going to win, the other wasn't. If the reason someone allowed people to die was because less people would die in the future so be it, when it came down to it, that was the only choice on the table. Would have loved if it was different, but it wasn't. You don't get to avoid the splatter.
