  • There's a bunch of stances she's taken I view negatively but admit there's nuance.

Then there's DOMA. Anyone on that let it be known their principles for marginalized groups is only "as convenient", which means support of them should also only be as is convenient or useful. She is no longer convenient or useful.

  • At the risk of a distro fight, if you bounce off Ubuntu give another distro a shot. I can't really explain it but I had issues with Ubuntu being almost to streamlined; it mostly worked out of the box as advertised but when it didn't I had no idea what was going on.

I just learned more quickly on Debian. It's a personal thing, so it might be you as well.

I'll also add: if you're new to Linux you're used to thinking about the Explorer, the desktop environment, etc as part the OS. They aren't. With nearly every Linux distro, you can have a more Mac like desktop (gnome) or windows (kinda KDE Plasma). And in either of those if you don't like the file Explorer there are options there to.

Most of what Ubuntu does stock should be fine, but I just remember getting used to things was easier for me with plasma than gnome coming from a windows machine.

edit: I wanted to add, some people have strong opinions about which of those other elements are better (desktop environments/explorers). It's mostly taste, except when it isn't, because they do in-fact have aspects than can be important. Stick to something well known and used while starting.

  • Even as someone who spends a good amount of time at the range, I never thought of this until Bill Burr did that bit about why he has a smaller pistol for home.

It didn't ruin John Wick, but any of the indoor scenes, especially the one where they'll have low gravely emotionally loaded dialogue... I have a hard time suspending my disbelief.

  • Not quite "find your pocket change" but a solid value: Starcraft + broodwars for $20.

So, soooooooo many hours. And it came in a sweet looking box! Like the kind that people shell out an extra $50 for as a pre-order these days.

I'll always remember you this way Blizz. You were one of the greats.

  • I played that game entirely to young and somehow finished the main quest line, eventually.

But man, I spent so many hours just murder hobo-ing it because I didn't really understand the quest based game loop yet. I'd just pick a direction and look for something cool. When I found someone that looked like they'd have cool stuff I'd just kill them and take their stuff. The only time I'd reload is when I got the prophecy warning; I broke like every quest except the main one.

This was compounded by the fact that 1) I was really enjoying just exploring and 2) that game was not particularly hard to destroy the balance on. Even a kid with poor mechanical skills could get wildly OP pretty easily.

    12/10 no notes.

  • That had to be wild to work on. You get brought into the kickoff meeting for what you assume is going to be some soulless marketing gimick, then they start laying it out.

It had a plot, a decent amount of levels. There was a good amount of heart that went into that.

  • Fair enough. That's because I'll admit it's not something that makes a ton of sense to me; I've always felt pretty comfy in my own skin. On the other hand, I certainly have felt unwelcome, and wouldn't want someone to feel that way. So it's nice to hear whats going on in other peoples heads.

  • "which name they're going by this decade"

It's boggles my mind some folks (not that you did) bring this up as a refutation of some sort. A habitual Thanksgiving guest has been figuring some stuff out for a while. I couldn't care less what they go by, except in so far as I hope it makes them happy. Like I guess I'd be happy to see it consistent because that means that person found something they're extra comfy in, but in meantime you do you... And please pass the gravy... And also what did you think about starfield... Only reason we need to talk about it is if you need someone to talk to.

  • I screw this up all. The. Time. I'm very good about not dead naming but really bad at pronouns. It's never been an issue because I'm putting forward the effort, people understand it's not intentionally disrespectful, and it helps I routinely get the names (birth names, that they've had for 30+ years) of decades long friends wrong.

I know that doesn't make it OK and I still try. But people act like if you mess up you're instantly beaten to death by a mob. Respect and welcomeness shows through even if you screw up. I know it's important to people, and that the person probably has a bunch of stories that more than justify being prickly about it, so I try and get it right. But it is amazing how much more just, you know, being a basic, respectful, human being who wants someone to be comfortable and talk about shared interests goes.

And that's always been a little sad to me. I can stumble through something that means a lot to that other person, something that they've probably lost a lot of sleep over, and yet extending just the basics of human courtesy goes so far, because it's not something that garunteed.

  • AB InBev does some great stuff with their craft owners. If it made sense for them to buy it back that's awesome, but their mantra around craft really is: "you've got success, we're just going to give you more tools". A lot of the big folks like Duvall operate that way and you wind up with regional breweries shipping kegs around the world.

  • Yeah I suppose thats true, I mean without a power curve the OCV isn't all that interesting to me (and that power curve is going to be influenced by manufacturing which is probably not optimized and may or not be compatible etc etc). So like I said, neat bit of chemistry, but I do get why people get burned out on these articles.
