  • It still existed when I did the same thing a year ago or so. They implemented it awhile back to try and avoid antitrust lawsuits around the world. Though, now that Zuckerberg has formally started sucking this regime's dick, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes away.

  • Dude, this is what's driving me crazy. He. Does. Not. Care. Putin, China, and Co. all want NATO weakened. And a crippled US that has pissed off all its allies means a severely weakened NATO. It is abundantly clear from allllll the evidence presented over the last 15+ years that Trump is a fucking foreign asset. And the administration that's bolstering him up this time around are a combination of foreign assets and religious fanatics that are too caught up in their own cult to realize they're being used to destroy the US, rather than rebuild it in some glorious Christofascist New Gilead wonderland that they envision.

It's so disgustingly obvious, especially the insanity that Elon Fuckrat is pulling. And if you go in any conservative forum, they're just full steam ahead with the final downfall of US democracy, accusing all liberals of being melodramatic and cultivating conspiracy theories. They actually condone Elon forcing his way into government agencies and hooking up illegal servers to hijack the Federal Government's primary payment distribution system, which in turn gives him the ability to stop payments on virtually everything the government pays for. He can literally cease all payments, including paying interest on our national debt, which could cripple the entire global economy due to the USD being the primary trade currency.

Fuck, man. I've been spiraling all week, it's brutal to experience totalitarianism happening in real-time and seeing only a fraction of the population give a shit.

  • How many consumer goods are even made in the US besides food? I know we do make some things, but 90% of the stuff at Walmart is imported crap.

I use Walmart as the example since that's where most of the GOP voter base lives and breathes.

  • Sure, I can definitely see that as an issue for Lemmy especially. I haven't used Mastodon in awhile (microblog format doesn't really appeal to me outside of when I'm looking for sales), but I had thought that the main mobile app defaulted to the biggest instance there. Is that not the case?

  • True, I don't disagree.

As for your last sentence, the freeze was originally intended to last 2 weeks while they "analyzed" everything. In my opinion, they usually pull these very public stunts that they know will draw everyone's attention while they're doing other crazy and/or corrupt shenanigans. While everyone's distracted, those other shenanigans don't get much--if any--news coverage.

  • Yes, as far as I'm aware. At least the medicaid portals came back online yesterday evening. President does NOT have the power of the purse. If SCOTUS ultimately rules against this, which would be insane because the constitution literally spells this exact phrasing out, then it'll be among the last proverbial nails in the coffin for checks and balances.

  • Agreed. Parents and kids' childhoods do play a huge role in how they ultimately turn out. However, there are near infinite variables during their development, many of which are completely outside our control. The best thing we can do is like you said, educate, mentor, and physically and emotionally support them as best we can. Sometimes, kids just grow into douchebag adults.

Anyway, OP, at the party you should totally just act like Mac, Charlie, and Dennis when they steal Frank's credit card and think they're rich.

  • As far as I know, Jack Dorsey left Bluesky almost a year ago: https://www.businessinsider.com/jack-dorsey-bluesky-twiiter-nostr-interview-2024-5

His interview on the topic: https://www.piratewires.com/p/interview-with-jack-dorsey-mike-solana

I have to somewhat agree with him that Bluesky is still very much susceptible to turning into Twitter all over again. Right now, it definitely feels like Twitter in its infancy but with all the modern QoL features we expect to have nowadays. Which is nice, of course. Twitter didn't used to be such a toxic shithole of bots and disinformation, it used to be a powerful communication tool for activism and journalists covering rapidly evolving events live.

However, the endgame of such platforms is inevitable. Higher user saturation means higher operating costs, which then usually means the company has a higher reliance on advertising, which then leads to more algorithms and data mining for targeted ads, which then leads to easier mass political manipulation campaigns.

I'm not sure if it's actually possible to attract mass audience without an algorithm driven model. Mastodon tried and it's had some moderate success, but because it's completely devoid of algorithms, users have a harder time discovering people/accounts/mindless entertainment. That's the only reason I can think of as to why Bluesky took off so much faster.

  • Do not do the last part. He's a minor living in fear. Publicly shaming him like that will will almost certainly create an even worse situation if the asshole is prone to physical violence. The key here is for the kid to survive in the short term and escape once they either can get the courts to grant them emancipation or they turn 18. Then after that, therapy so they can learn to move on and thrive.

  • Ummm, to an extent.

    https://texaslawhelp.org/article/corporal-punishment

If a child is showing signs of lasting marks, bruises, burns, broken bones, or other physical injuries, this is likely abusive.

If it's leaving lasting bruises, even in Texas that may be where they draw the line? If it happens incessantly, along with verbal abuse, you may be able to get some help.

That being said, getting tossed into the foster care system isn't often an improvement. My suggestion, besides maybe discretely seeking resources, is to focus on near term goals of becoming self sufficient and getting the hell out of there as fast as you can. Pieces of shit like this guy don't deserve children.

  • What a fucking shit show. It is astounding how impotent our legislature has been for so long. This whole thing could easily be avoided with actual fucking laws, but instead they've continued to hand more and more power over go the executive/presidency for years and years.

  • He's morphed into what exactly? Being anti-vaxxers? I fortunately don't know any anti-vaxxers personally, but I know plenty of MAGA idiots. Even those idiots tend to support vaccines, though. I just truly don't understand anti-vaxxers, they're the dumbest of the dumb.

  • Yes, I fully relate with this as if you spoke from my heart. Agreed on all points, haha.

I do cook, kind of have to when you have kids. But I definitely do not enjoy doing it. Especially because I'll slave over a new dinner idea and my kids will just refuse to eat it.

  • I know people who like that he's on board with shrooms and other recreational drugs as alternative treatments. Which I can honestly understand, given all the research that says stuff like shrooms does offer some promise in some mental health therapies. It's ridiculous an agency like the DEA can dictate what drug options are available to people.

But other than that, RFK Jr is a fucking idiot and should absolutely not be allowed to head our health agencies.

  • Dude it's insane. I don't understand how the hell these places stay in business anymore when the quality still sucks ass and it's all so expensive now. Like even taco bell, who used to be the king of cheap, costs a fuckton these days.

  • I don't understand this legitimization of Elon. He has no formal US government appointment in any capacity. It's all just been Trump informally saying he'll head the Dept of Government Efficiency, which isn't even a real government agency (only Congress has the power to create new agencies). So why care what Elon thinks? I guarantee that either, A) the Trump admin will throw him out eventually when he's no longer useful, or B) he "quits" when he's gotten whatever governmental protections for his companies that he's inevitably seeking. Ugh, I hate billionaires.
