  • Ye, Sam is good.

  • Good questions.

    1. Absolutely valid, but also kind of misleading. For a new user the biggest issue is probably picking the DE. Package managers are important, but they all pretty much do the same thing with some syntax differences. There are some edge cases though. If you really want to go through picking your distro piece by piece, look up installing Gentoo. I don't really recommend it, but there it is.
    2. You're not going to be really missing anything by installing Mint, I don't think. Distros do have different packages in their repositories, but with Flatpaks, Snaps, AppImages, etc. it's rare to not have something available. And you can always just compile what you need yourself.
    3. Librewolf and Strawberry can get me pretty far.
    4. Drivers come with the kernel. You can uninstall and install programs according to your needs. Be careful though, always make sure you're not removing something that's an important dependency for other programs. Might lose your whole DE that way.
    5. Not really something you should be concerned with, honestly. I personally use KDE Plasma and favor QT based programs because I don't want to pull in GTK libraries, but that's honestly kind of silly. Some people just like to keep their number of installed packages low.
    6. Just pick one, really. With experience, you can start to personalize your system. You can try different distros/DEs by booting from a flash drive in to a live environment. No changes will be made to your system and you can see if you like the DE.
  • I think we all just look alike to our computer overlords.

  • My first Linux distro was Mandrake. I'm not exactly sure when it was, but FiveStar sounds about right, so 2003 or so. I've since used Gentoo, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and possibly some others. I did use Windows 8.1 for a good few years, but came back to Linux when I saw where Windows was headed. Right now I'm on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, which is pretty darn good, and thinking of maybe hopping on to OpenMandriva, though not out of any real necessity. I have a PinePhone and have used Mobian and PosmarketOS on it. There's also my first generation Raspberry Pi running Raspbian.

The way modern commercial OSs are developing, I'm extremely glad something like Linux exists. Libre software is the future.

  • First it was Amarok, then Clementine, and now it's Strawberry.

  • You don't actually have to pay Amazon anything. I suggest you consider this.

  • Psychology is a lot more than just psychotherapy my dude. It's the study of human mind and behavior. It's a vast field of study.

  • Stanford has an interesting lecture series on youtube. Yale has one too.

  • I'm happy you're having fun computing and all, but I'm going to be that guy: It's rite of passage.

  • The first time I installed Debian on my desktop I didn't do my homework properly. This was a long time ago. It didn't take long for me to realize just how out of date many packages were and that was a deal breaker. I have since used Debian successfully in different contexts, because I knew what to expect. I still wouldn't install Debian stable on my desktop because I prefer to have a more up to date environment. Might try Debian sid one of these days though. But yeah, Debian, great distro, but you need to know what you're getting in to.

  • Happens about once a year. It doesn't last long, so I just kind of savor the feeling.

  • Oh that's funny. Cheers for that!

  • Some things will never be ok. Some things you don't ever want to be ok with. But this too shall pass.

  • Thanks for asking, but I don't have an easy answer to that one.

  • Well that's just disingenuous as all fuck.

  • I lost my dear friend over 20 years ago and it still hurts. Sorry for your loss.
