  • Gentoo has the best package manager I've ever used. But is it worth it? Depends on your expectations. It's a great distro if you are willing to invest the time and do the work. I would never recommend it to a new user who just wants something that works, but a tech savvy user who is ready to learn (also from mistakes)? Sure, go for it. For me, an update eventually broke it to a point where it was no longer worth the effort, but for a few years I did enjoy tinkering with it. The control you get is intoxicating.

My experience is from mid-00's, so things may have changed. From other's comments however, the core experience seems to be the same. I would not install it myself anymore, but that's not to say it's a bad distro.

  • I am not a product for these corporations to sell.

  • Yeah, that workload is excessive. I'm glad she decided to take care of herself. "All or nothing" burns you out real quick.

  • Nice! I also compiled the kernel multiple times when I used Gentoo back in mid 00's. It may not be a big deal as such, but I feel kind of good being able to say I've done it.

Next challenge: write your own kernel.

  • I mean, base Debian should work out fine.

  • I played through Chrono Trigger multiple times as a teenager. It's a fantastic game for sure.

  • Recently? This is a long time coming. Users have been accepting all kinds of shit from big players without complaint. Even if they protest it's usually just performative and they keep using the services, sites and software that violates all kinds notions of user and privacy rights. Most people unfortunately are (understandably) not equipped to really even understand the kind of shady shit these companies pull on the daily. The internet is going to shit and its users will gobble it up and ask for more. It has been frustrating watching this happen, but there's really very little that can be done.

  • I hope it works out!

  • Ah, ReiserFS. I remember when it was the cool kid's choice. Then with the murdering it went out of style. They were weird times.

  • OpenMandriva recently released a rolling release version of their distro. It's a small project, but I'm personally looking at it as an alternative for Fedora.

  • I actually had to install ungoogled-chromium to change my email on PayPal. No other browser would work, it was weird. That's the only instance I can remember where I've had to try Chrome. Otherwise I FireFox has worked fine. Wonder what happened there.

  • Choosing a browser has been picking between terrible choices for a long time now. It's a shame.

  • The fact that they took a bit of time to say a few words that signify nothing speaks loud and clear.

  • Every time I've tried using modern GNOME it's like pulling teeth. I hate it. I think it has actual usability issues. Not disparaging anyone who likes it, it just really doesn't suit me.

GNOME classic shell was ok, but when I installed KDE Plasma it was like coming home. Everything made sense and everything was where it needed to be. More or less.

In the end I'm just glad Linux has a variety of DEs to choose from. Even if you choose GNOME, you weirdo.

  • GNU Hurd. Never used it, but I like the idea and would love to see it become a viable option.
