  • you can actually edit images and titles on lemmy, we are not bound by reddit's limitations

  • The horseshoe theory is bullshit not because tankies and nazis don't behave similarly, but because they're not the two logical extremes of the same spectrum. You can be far left without being a tankie by just not being a bootlicker, and you can be far right without being a nazi by (you guessed it) also not being a bootlicker. Even with how many boots you lick the left/right division of the political spectrum is still horribly reductive, but it's super important to split the axis of authoritarianism vs liberalism out of it when addressing tankies, because they have a lot of colloquially left beliefs with the authoritarianism and anti-progressivism commonly associated with the right wing.

  • Your bias is showing, lol.

Tankies are generally anti-west authies that root for self-proclaimed "communist" systems like China (which is state capitalist) or Russia (which is an oligopoly, the exact thing late stage capitalism devolves into). They generally spew the exact authoritarian and bigoted bullshit as the alt-right but do it under a different flag that historically opposed nazis, which is why they constantly claim that they're somehow completely different and even more, "opposite" to nazis. Lemmy unfortunately has an infestation of them because the developers are tankies, which often shows on lemmy.ml (the instance said devs run).

Like most reactionaries, tankies have no principles either, just a group they hate and they will twist their ideology as much as it takes to get you that end result. For tankies, that group is "the west". They will coat their bullshit in opposition of the ultra-rich (which most of us can agree on) but make no mistake, as long as you live in a western nation they want you gone, or at best subjugated. This is currently the most apparent in their support of Russia's genocidal war against Ukraine, because it props up a power that they perceive as "friendly" to them, but you might also catch them supporting the Uighur genocide and respond with extreme amounts of whataboutism every time such a take is brought up, essentially detracting from any problem in world powers they align with with counter-accusations of "the west".

  • london, vienna, and botez gambit?

  • oh, i see, makes sense then why it was never tried. how are we going to have a society without a state to govern it? (i mean not to concern troll here, if a solution can be created for this that would be genuinely interesting, but for example that council the soviets created a century ago was clearly a state)

  • And what would be those conditions?

  • They did lead our last good government. And yes, I'd like that too, I voted for the coalition they were in in every election since I had the right to vote. I'm just saying that things being better is not the same as reinstating the same regime we had under the soviets, that would be pretty universally things going worse.

We're in a failing capitalist system, but it still manages to be less oppressive than the failing socialist/communist/call it whatever you want system we had before.

  • Hungarian here. We had ten good years, then the same ruling class started to do the same shit they did back then but under a different name. But at least nowadays you can leave the country, which many do since -- the frequent attempts to do so were an important cultural touchstone here in the 45 years of soviet occupation.

Trust me, no one wants the same shit back, that's just a political talking point propping up Orbán's pro-russian bullshit.

  • no one can, not even those who advocate for it. (aside from "not that thing that was repeatedly tried and failed")

  • That's a very interesting question, actually. Can you explain how liberals are authoritarians? Beyond the contradiction in the wording (which, I mean, the DPRK exists, wouldn't be the first time something isn't what it says on the tin, lol) it sounds like a super interesting topic. I actually can't figure out why they should scan as authoritarians to me so I would appreciate your input there.

(Absolutely no sarcasm intended. I can't seem to figure out how to phrase this better -- I think it's because from the context of the discussion there is an expectation that what I'm asking for elaboration on should be a trivial subject, but I'm no expert on this.)

  • i'm always baffled by how the only people who hate far right authies more than the average person who has to live in their crosshair are far left authies. but that's some interesting insight into 4chan, i didn't know it was authies with specifically the right-aligned flags, they just scan the same to me.

so yeah, thanks for the info, good to know that 4chan trolls are expected to appear on burggit or exploding-heads, and that they don't overlap with tankies much

  • the instance admins likely aren't and i doubt most users are either, i'm just saying the average 4chan user has an increased likelihood for joining an instance like that

  • that's a question for the scientists to answer, we just have to watch their incentive structures and verify that they're doing their peer review

  • There is no such thing as no ruling class, and generally, anyone who sells you that is aiming to become the ruling class themselves. In the best case scenario, they want to be a benevolent dictator, and we might have seen a few people get close to that over the course of history but no benevolent dictatorship lasts longer than two generations and many fail even sooner than that. In the worst case, they are just riding on this political train and aim to be a not so benevolent dictator themselves.

Any system that does not account for human nature and build an incentive structure that guarantees the maximum possible equality/equity while assuming everyone involved is selfish is a system that's ill suited for humanity. And if you force an ill-suited system, someone will inevitably swoop in and use it for their personal gains. Like as bad as our current system is with wealth inequality, the soviet system had an even slimmer and richer elite, they just hid it well.

I agree with all of your goals, but we need to do this the smart way, and that involves setting the priority exactly as your list goes and actually accounting for how people behave. The result might not be perfect, but we can do better than we do currently, I think that should be the goal rather than going for perfection and falling for snake oil on the way.

  • technically, they're called the fire brigade, not necessarily the fire prevention brigade

  • i don't doubt that racism is a component to this, but there's also the part where breaking up the monotone suburban hellscape would make it "unsafe for kids". people move to suburbs with the specific purpose of having kids, so the place is designed to be inescapable without a car but with no clear signs of confinement, just an endless continuation of the same sanitized space. then when said kids are old enough to trust they can learn to drive in the same environment and only then released from the tutorial world they're safely stuck into whenever they come "home"

but yes, also, god forbid your children have to meet minorities or poor people, and since small shops don't pay well and have the audacity to employ non-white people, the only way is to cut them out. you can pick your shit up at the gas station, if you're an adult.
