A tragic story that should be added to piles of child tragedy in Palestine as well as the other affected countries from these conflicts. Speaking of Palestine, I can't see it mentioned at all on the front page of rferl.org.
Yeah, we should do both. Minimize the damage and reduce reliance. I think quitting cold turkey might lead to worse outcomes, including a possible reorientation towards the US under a prospective reactionary conservative government.
The millions of Canadians suffering only works for a time. In the end people will vote away freedom in exchange for a piece of bread. This much has been proven by history. So in any plan that involves the suffering of millions, there has to be a portion that ends that suffering in as short time frame as possible. I'm not sure there is one at the moment. There are some concepts of a plan. I don't know if we can realistically do this for example without opening up trade with China and only relying on the EU as a replacement to the US. And right now we're taking a more or less China Bad stance. Perhaps this would change if we get fucked by Trump. Perhaps Carney is using this as a stick in negotiations. E.g. if you fuck us, we'll have no choice but to do China OK in order to take care of Canadians. Maybe the EU is enough, I don't know. I just know that the EU themselves are dependent on China in a few areas and we shouldn't be paying their profit margins to get the same stuff.
Not if we're distracted with separating trash from recycling. We have way too many distractions so we might actually not be able to focus on the guillotines.
I'm not sure if we'll replace him just yet. He has to show that he's tried all reasonable avenues and if he does and Trump still fucks us, then he comes out and says - I tried all I could, now we'll have to take these unprecedented steps to prevent economic meltdown. I think in such a scenario Canadians would rally behind him and consent to COVID-like economic supports among other things, even WWII style policies around prices controls, taxes and so on, depending on how bad things get. The other parties would also be forced to support him because it would look pretty bad if they stood against taking care of Canadians during an economic crisis.
Now I hear the angry noises here, and I'm pretty angry myself, but I'm hoping that this is one elbow down so we can get something for it, like keeping supply management. If we get fucked on all fronts then... Yeah. Fuck.
Mamdani added in his response: “I have already had to start to get used to, get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I’m from, who I am, ultimately, because he wants to distract from what I’m fighting for, and I’m fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower, that he has since then betrayed.”
Goddamn, this reads like a response that came from a real socialist playbook. Don't take the bait on the culture war bullshit, say it's distraction from helping workers. Wow.
Perhaps they don't really want a regime change, or at least not an orderly, prosperous one. Perhaps getting the Islamic Republic to dig its heels would prevent improvement of relationships with the world, lifting of sanctions and economic growth that would create more resources for military strengthening. Perhaps having the ambiguous big bad Muslims in power makes it easy to manufacture consent both in Israel and abroad, for arbitrary bombings. Perhaps keeping this enemy keeps people in Israel motivated to comply with the right wing policies of some factions.
It's beautiful. Mamdani and any other socialist will campaign on this hard. These mfkers have gotten really dumb having amassed wealth in an environment where their ancestors had made relative peace with the working class in part by propagandizing that rich people are food for the workers. They seem to think that the status quo where people aren't wholesale anti-rich is a stable equilibrium. I guess they're not reading the latest data.
If we could only pull that off without being preemptively "defended" against... I don't think them fuckers would sit tight while we make a nuke. I think the only way we pull this off is if we could buy or "host" European nukes which must happen in total secrecy and extremely quickly from conception to deployment.
This is the material explanation. They expect increased productivity and therefore higher output and therefore higher profits from the same workforce. Not necessarily to downsize. Downsizing or upsizing would be dictated by a combination of the realized productivity gains and the uptake of their products by the market.
