  • Lightbulbs are pretty easy to make if you:

    • Can find a jeweler or blacksmith like you said
    • Can generate a ton of electricity somehow
    • Are okay with the lightbulb lasting no more than 1 second
  • Even if you studied it, the answer boils down to "magic".

You take these magnets, and move them around these long snakes of metal (because electrons can move easily through metal) and that makes the electrons in the wires move.

Okay, why does moving around a magnet near metal make something inside it move?

Well there's something we call the "Lorentz force" which basically pushes a magnetic thing in a specific way if you move another magnetic thing around it

    But why does that happen?

    Magic

  • Ratings in general are heavily biased. For example, critics have a very different point of view from most viewers. And even the typical non-critic who goes on sites to rate movies isn't the average viewer either. People like that tend to over-analyze every detail and try to look for a deeper meaning in the works. But that doesn't correlate with your enjoyment of something.

  • This is going to be a boring answer but I use neovim. I do use it as my ide as well but it’s so fast and lightweight that when I need to edit a random config file or something, I just start another instance of it.

  • It was common for european colonizers to say this about indigenous people, basically meaning that they don't participate in the world economy. Or, said another way, they're not being exploited for profits by said european colonizers, which is obviously bad.

  • Textbook example of the frog in boiling water. No one would have accepted this behavior before, but now we're so used these big companies doing whatever they want, we have no problem shrugging off whatever they do.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that if you're not actively sabotaging these companies (through piracy at least), you're morally in the wrong.

  • I get the sentiment, but most places don't have even halfway decent coffee shops. Everyone gives starbucks shit (rightfully so), but the fact is if you walk into a random cafe in America, it will most likely be inferior to starbucks. The level of quality in American coffee is just abysmal. And if you're traveling, you won't know if the cafe you take a chance on is a hidden gem (spoiler, it never is). I was in Austin one time and I found this hipster place that had great reviews on google. The interior was really nice, nice place to work, spacious, etc. The coffee tasted like dog water. It wasn't mediocre, it was trash. I'm sure Austin has great cafes, but unless you live there how will you know? Starbucks is a consistent mediocre coffee.
