  • The heaviest sentence was given to an adolescent who was formally given a 6-month prison sentence, although he should be able to serve this at home while under electronic surveillance.

    Grounded.

  • There's one restaurant in my area that has some tables for one. I noticed that, for me, those do feel more complete when I'm dining alone. Instead of extra, conspicuously empty seats around the rest of the table, there's a table clearly designed for one diner to just enjoy a good meal.

And it's not enough to have tables with only one chair. If such a table is amidst larger-party tables, I think it still makes the other usual places at the table feel abnormally empty. What makes tables for one feel "right" has something to do with their placement in the restaurant (so as not to feel odd or exceptional), their orientation (so as not to face the diner towards someone else's gaze--unless mingling is the goal), and then the size and number of seats.

It's probably difficult for some restaurants to accommodate solo diners due to a need for density, but when a restaurant might have some space that would otherwise not be all that useful (like a little extra space between a planter divider and a walkway, where larger tables just wouldn't fit), it is an opportunity to attract solo diners who want to enjoy the solo experience of focusing on the meal and their own thoughts rather than bar seating. (And, on that topic, I think it's becoming more normal for people to not want alcohol displayed prominently in front of them when they're really just looking for a nice meal.)

  • I put a Ubiquiti long-range Wifi 6 AP on my ceiling, fed with a Dream Machine Pro SE. Google Fiber just kept saying, "You know, we could 'upgrade' you to our mesh stuff for free!" Ha, no thanks.

Btw, this is not an endorsement of Google Fiber. I just cancelled it. They can't or won't handle chronic infrastructure issues. Multiple outages a day, every day (as confirmed by their app) for weeks to months, and they still wouldn't even acknowledge that there was a chronic problem, much less tell me any status of a permanent resolution. That service is total trash.

  • Dey took are jarbs!!

  • I wonder what impact this has. From my perspective, the people who think like this are usually the ones not interested in traveling anywhere past the end of their street.

  • Paddle boarding 1.2 km from shore... isn't that a bit far out for just a meat popsicle on a fish-shaped piece of styrofoam?

  • I feel like that building's sign might be a good clue, but I'm not sure what it says.

Edit: Ah! "Samoborski Muzej"? An art museum in Samobor... Croatia?

  • Every US enemy right now is looking into harnessing the power of flocks of birds.

  • I read that the rotors share a common drive shaft that runs all the way across to keep them locked in sync and so one engine can power both equally. I guess they feather the blades differentially to control bank angle?

  • including names and email addresses

By now, that's been stolen from so many companies that I wonder how much new info is really being compromised compared to what's already out there. Speaking anecdotally, my spam already comes personalized. Like, even the obviously-not-from-a-partner phishy-looking stuff.

  • The place is small enough to know who "the boys" are, and yet there are at least three lemmings in this thread who have been there (assuming OP is the photographer). The Internet is so cool.

  • Your first post didn't make any sense to me, either, until you explained it, and now it makes sense, although I'd recommend clarifying as "land animal meat is the opposite goal of fish meat" or something like that.

But yeah, I'd never thought about it that way. Interesting.

  • I always crimp my own, including using slide-on/slide-off hoods. That way I can back the hood off before plugging it into the port, which keeps it easy to disconnect, and I can slide it back on before pulling it through a tight spot.

I love an article where none of the handful of geographic clues mean anything to me. These sound like names in a fictional universe. Without just googling, I'm guessing Washington state.

Edit: Ahhhhh, California. "Modesto" should have been my strongest clue.

  • The actual headline:

Flipboard is abandoning X for Mastodon / The platform says it will hold on to its accounts and retweet from time to time, but it plans to focus on Mastodon and other social platforms instead.

My initial perception was focusing on the fact that that's not abandoning it. That's keeping one foot in the door, just in case.

Thinking more about it, I think the wise thing is to announce it like this so the head brat at Xitter doesn't revoke their account and hand it to someone else. Editing my statement above, too.
