  • I opted out when they first introduced it. So it's not in use on my phone and never has been. My smart home devices are all older so nothing with Gemini built in. This may be the difference for me. I dunno.

The main smart speaker I use is a Lenovo Smart Display and it hasn't received updates in years. It's got physical switches for the mic and camera and my smart home stuff is on a separate network from everything else in my house on purpose.

I think the newest speaker I own is the set of Google home max's and they don't even sell those anymore. They've been disabled for mic so they're only for casting to.

This works for me but my home is small and all I've really got is some Philips hue lights and a couple of smart blinds. I set up routines early on so I'm not really asking the assistant to do a lot of things using voice controls.

On my phone at work I use it when my hands are occupied, and I use it I'm the car (but my car isn't equipped for Android Auto etc). So I think for me it's probably just limited in what it can interact with to the point I don't notice it much.

  • What we have now in America is a system that is volunteer or conscript (commit a crime and you may be given the option to join the military or do prison time). This takes advantage of the poorest and most vulnerable in our society.

I am generally for the idea of mandatory service. But the actuality as I experienced military service is not something I would wish on other people. The military is kind of broken in many ways.

Suicide rates are higher than the national average.

Rapes/sexual assaults are higher than the national average.

They have a blind spot where mental healthcare is concerned.

Leadership often employs and elevates people who will actively take advantage of their position. This is often detrimental to the members who serve under them.

The military often does a horrible job of allowing injured people the time and conditions to fully heal.

The military also treats everyone as if they lack common sense and the ability to reason. As a result it does not promote the type of people who think outside the box. There's multiple ways that military service infantalizes its members instead of treating them like adults.

There are many reasons I think it could be a good idea and a good experience for the vast majority of people. But not as it is now. The system would need an overhaul.

  • Yeah I have udm14.com set as a custom search engine. So I don't use it for search. It's usually for things like triggering a camera or timer or similar for stuff at work where I might need to use a tripod, or for routines at home (smart lighting and blinds and the TV for my kid). I've been looking into swapping to home assistant but something's I haven't found solutions for yet.

  • They also already rolled back Biden admin's order for AI protections. So they don't even have the benefit of those. There's supposedly a Trump admin AI order now in place but it doesn't have the same scope at all. So Altman and pals may just be SOL. There's no regulatory body to tell except the courts and China literally doesn't care about those.

  • I don't know if I'd considered it a board game, but the Forbidden Island game (and the others like it) spring to mind. The idea is that you and the other players have to work together to gather everything you need including the treasure you came for before the island you're on sinks into the ocean.

It's fun working together and I always thought it did a good job of incentivising that.

  • It would be awesome if they did face consequences so I didn't have to keep my credit locked while I go through the process of getting a new SSN. This is getting ridiculous. They notified me by mail like a week ago that my data is in this breach too. This really needs to stop happening.

  • Sometimes parents look back on things and realize that it's too little too late. My mother doesn't like the relationship I have with her (I'm not zero contact but I only call when I'm feeling up to it and that can take months). I was physically abused as a kid on top of having ADHD (then ADD), and I was diagnosed but never medicated.

My youngest brother has Autism and my parents went above and beyond to get him everything he needed by my sister and I (both with ADHD) basically got nothing.

It's exhausting to think about what ifs. At this point in this time I have received an apology (though not for the things I remember, and more for the things she regrets which do not necessarily align). I think a lot of her regret is based on our relationship now and how she wishes it could be.

But I look at it like this. I'm just living in the world, doing my best to survive and take care of myself. That's something I have been doing since I was a child. I continue to do that because I don't know any other way. I do not have the energy to give to her for her regret. I acknowledge it. I accept the apology. But I gave up being angry about it. I just do not have the energy for it.

We can't change how we grew up. It's better to acknowledge the sentiment and move on. At least, I think so. Try not to tie up too much of yourself in what could have been. Get to know and accept the you that is in the here and now. You'll make your own way. You got this far.

  • People don't want to wake up. They see horrors every day and look no further than the surface of them. They are horrified by things they do not even begin to understand. But they'll push a narrative if you put it in front of them and they feel reasonably selfrighteous about it.

That's why nobody is out there actively eating the rich and becoming the Luigi they want to see in the world.

  • Linux. They should do Steam OS. Their main downfall right now is windows and the price point. But for the price they often offer better hardware. Steam OS is a much better experience than Nintendo's ecosystem and the dockability of these handhelds is already on par with the switch. They can do a lot more than the switch and switch two will be able to do with more game availability and game streaming as well.

  • Yeah. I think part of it is that I've played so many and even ones that I thought weren't particularly difficult still had sections that got progressively harder over time, or required me to think about what I was supposed to do. It's perhaps conditioning as much as anything.

  • I don't think it is. And it does have a cozy game vibe. I guess I was expecting a little bit more resistance getting to new areas and stuff... A lot of rougelites and metroidvanias and such that I've played are much harder. The art is adorable. The puzzles are pretty easy so far. And I guess I just expected it to be harder because of other games I've played.

  • This was a comment about Apple and Google specifically, not about their app stores or the apps on them created by non-apple/non-google developers. There's a clear difference.
