  • There are at least some Duolingo courses that use AI voices exclusively and they are shit.

On the one hand, having an AI to talk to sounds like something that could be good. Getting a real person to talk to every user would be impossible. I just don’t think the technology is going to meet expectations any time soon.

  • Does ChatGPT incorrectly put spaces around the em dash, too? There should be no spaces around an em dash—that’s a clue that implies a human writer.

And, em dashes and en dashes are great—they should be used more often.

  • I make liberal use if the Lemmy feature of blocking users/communities/instances.

I noticed the same thing as you—so much kinky shit when browsing All. I mostly don’t care what gets people off but I don’t need to see it in my feed. Eventually, I found that it was easiest to block entire instances where that stuff is prevalent. It’s not like you’ll miss anything important.

Same with communities and users. If I know a community isn’t going to interest me, I block it from All. If a user bothers me enough that I recognize the name, I block them.

It’s just better this way. You’re not missing much by blocking. Your time and attention is better spent on the things that matter to you.

  • Yes. I’d have to learn their language first, anyway. I already know bits of modern versions but not much. Then, introduce the warning of invasions and teach them English with the caution that people speaking groups of people speaking will bring death and destruction.

It’s not like they’ll already have a fear of English or any concept of the language before I teach it to them.

  • Do my best to warn the locals of the coming invasion. Learn their language and teach them English and tell them not to trust any group of strangers who speak it.

Help improve their technology as best I can. I’m not sure how much I’d be able to improve it. At least, teach them to wear masks and wash their hands when around sick people.

  • Lemmy and Mastodon aren’t centralized. Instances can federate with other instances as they choose. If your instance has, for example, a lot of bigoted communities and users, you can expect the bigger instances to de-federate from yours.

You can always federate with instances that reject “EU norms”—whatever that means—in a bubble of your own.
