  • I really had no idea. Thanks for letting me know.

  • Yeah. The *key instances are fun to use. It doesn't feel like using a business email.

  • I have few advice for you:

    • for your old laptop you should install Linux Mint. What I have seen is that LM works better for slightly older laptops.
    • if you are using linux, you will definitely face problems, and most of the time other people has faced the same problem and there is a solution of it online.
    • if you can't find it online, ask about it in forums. Many will try to help you.
  • Also, check out https://piefed.social/ - it's not quite ready for the masses yet as it lacks many features, but damn it is so welcoming and friendly and fills me with hope for our future when I see those

Yes. Many people are too hung up on mastodon and lemmy to see that there are other software in fediverse. And if lemmy UI doesn't quite work for one, they should try a different one. There's no need to stick to the most popular software.

As for communities, there's not much one can do about it.

  • Right when they are in talks about getting bought by Sony

  • Ok yes. I just checked and the new version is very fast compared to the version lemdroid uses.

  • Lemdro.id uses Photon as it's default UI, but it's incredibly slow and sometimes it doesn't even load properly. As much as I love the polish, I wouldn't recommend it as default UI. Using photon as an alternative UI is much better option.

  • it is technically bloat

If we go into that, then every GUI is a bloat.

  • Firefox browser, misskey as my SNS. On Android: Komikku (a tachiyomi fork), element X matrix client; on my desktop: rnote for note taking, fractal matrix client.

  • For some reason I read the first part of the article in 60s news commentator voice in my head.

    Also

For those potential members who’ve somehow figured out what they need from a server, it's hard to understand which servers actually offer those things, either from outside the fediverse itself or from inside it but without a strong network.

    Really important point.

  • Embedded videos are particularly annoying.

  • Not terribly fond of their icon as well. Personally, I would be willing to look past the name if they had a better icon.

  • Well hashtags clearly don't work quite as well for discovery, which is why there is demand for starter packs. But what happens if other backends don't implement it? Then people on the other instances, that is not mastodon, doesn't have a way to opt out.

  • I personally prefer hashtags over this. And given how liberally some admins block and defederate other instances I will stick with hashtags in the near future.

  • Surprisingly, I mispronounce it exactly like that.

  • not really. honestly never been much active social media. I will say this though. I was on reddit for a little while and that was bad. Never again will I go back.

  • Yeah, don't just just join the largest instance. Look at the smaller ones. And that is true for any fedi backend. Be it misskey or mastodon, sometimes smaller is better. Sometimes smaller instance has better local community and better administration.
