  • This other side of the coin, and this is coming from a long time Linux user, is that for the vast majority of its life Linux has focused on functionality and not toward anything the majority of people care about. Only relatively recently is it a fairly good experience for the average user, but it still has some issues that will mean most users won't even consider it.

I really wish it could become mainstream, but until it fixes that fine tuning then most people won't consider it vs a Mac or Windows.

Remember the Zune? It has way more features and functionality than the iPod. But nobody cared. There's a reason it lost.

A lot of us put up with Linux because of our principles or because we're developers.

  • I get that there are lessons learned for new advances in technology and society, but companies like DuPont and 3M knew about this and hid it. Then when legislation comes out banning chemicals they use, they change basically one atom in the molecule to avoid the regulation and keep going. They aren't honest mistakes.

  • Yeah, it absolutely astounds me that they polluted the entire world and poisoned everyone and everything within it, and then the people are footing the bill for trying to cleaning it up. And that's only our drinking water, not all the plants and animals we eat all the time that have it in them in probably huge amounts. AFAIK there is no plan for that at all so our cells will still be swimming in them.

3M and others should be taken over by the government and turned into nonprofits where 100% of their profit goes to cleaning up the world.

  • I think that makes a lot of sense though. I think if he only discussed the nuance and complexity that people would assume these differences would be huge, and suddenly their coffee would start emitting rays of holy light or something.

It's very complex, and it does make a difference, but in the end it is what is considered fine tuning by a lot of people. And once you understand that, then you can let your mind zoom into those details and it will no longer be fine tuning.

  • Personally, I'd think it would be much for impactful to play for whoever, then donate all the proceeds to some important cause. Telling e.g. Netanyahu no to a Foo Fighters concert isn't going to make him change his mind about anything. But giving the concert will take money away from him and give it to something important.

  • I couldn't find much info doing a search - was the shooter not an immigrant and he is wrongly implying he was? Was it a different motive than what he implied?

From his wording in this clip it just sounded like he was saying "Canada is a peaceful place, so if you're going to move here then don't bring violence and problems from your country with you", which seems reasonable to me. I didn't see him say anything like "all immigrants are dangerous".

  • Same thing that happened with the internet also happened with capitalism. It's like you need some regulation to ensure competition. It could have been so awesome if we had what we were promised.
