On the contrary, my disdain for touchscreens is a result of spending far too much time with them. A larger, foldable screen isn't going to solve that problem.

A phone with a real keyboard would solve that problem—I loved my Droid 3 and miss it terribly—but for reasons I absolutely cannot fathom, no phone manufacturer wants to make a truly good phone any more.

I don't know what estimates you speak of, but I manage a website, and the monthly tablet users on it is basically zero.

  • @MrDrOink

I can comfortably manage emails, shopping, web browsing, lemmy, social media

Without a real keyboard? How? I find the experience of doing such things on a touchscreen infuriatingly slow and error-prone. That's why I'm using a desktop to write this post.

Arguing against folding phones is almost the same as arguing against tablets.

That's not saying much. Tablets have been a flop.

  • @MrDrOink

I remember there being an uproar about folding screens developing visible seams after a while. I would consider that a failure.

Unless your folding phone also has a physical keyboard and a serious non-toy operating system, I fail to see how it can practically replace a laptop or desktop.

  • If I want a bigger screen, I'm reaching for a laptop or desktop, not a phone with a self-destructing screen. I expect my gear to last at least 5 years, preferably 10.

  • There are (non-AI) algorithms for that. Git uses one to detect renames. No need to melt the ice caps just for that.

  • Especially plumbers that save princesses from giant evil mutant turtles.

  • Also, you can watch movies on your PC or phone now. If you're watching by yourself, you don't particularly need a big screen any more, just a normal screen and a good pair of headphones.

Provided your eyes can comfortably focus at such a short distance for 2 hours at a time, of course.

  • It's not just that they were CRTs.

You can get an excellent picture from the CRT computer monitors of the '90s and '00s, with high resolution (up to 2048×1536—better than 1080p!) and color rendering that's arguably better than modern LCDs.

CRT TVs had low resolution, and NTSC/PAL has pretty bad color fidelity as well, but one of those high-definition CRTs connected to an RGB component video input (VGA or SCART) carrying high-definition content (DVD or Blu-Ray) is another story entirely.

  • Note that this also applies to politicians.

  • No idea. I've never had dogs. Wouldn't know the first thing about caring for them.

  • @TachyonTele

They can't get pregnant if they're spayed. They can be made resistant to fleas and ticks. And how are they going to fight stray cats, when they're not in a stray cat's territory?

  • Indeed, but the old tankie instances still exist, same as always. The centrists went elsewhere, to non-tankie instances that were set up for them.

Colonization involves taking somebody else's land, but this is more like creating more land out of thin air and settling there.

  • @Waraugh

Keeping cats indoors 24/7 is not healthy for them.

  • @TachyonTele

🤣🤣 I didn't even notice that! But yeah, my landlord would definitely not let me have cows. 🤣
