  • Computer manufacturers often distributed buggy, pointless, or redundant third-party software ("bloatware" or "crapware") to help subsidize the cost of the hardware.

To make more profit for the manufacturer, I think you mean. Until the cryptocurrency scammers came along and started stripping store shelves bare, you could build a computer from parts, it'd be cheaper than buying a pre-built computer, and it would be free of crapware.

  • True, but you know what they say. “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Maybe the last malicious firmware only does its evil thing if you're running Windows, but what about the next malicious firmware? After such a grave betrayal, no one should trust Lenovo ever again. Not as long as other options exist.

  • I think they expect you to connect all external devices through the USB port. Since there's only one port on most phones, you'll need a USB-C hub if you want to connect headphones and a flash drive at the same time.

I wonder if there are USB-C hubs that connect external devices to the phone and also charge the phone at the same time. That'd be neat.

  • The problem with multi-family housing is that it's ripe for abuse by building managers. Unless you own the entire building you live in and the entire plot of land it sits on, you don't own anything, and your home can be taken from you at will without meaningful recourse.

I gather this isn't an issue in Europe, where people have actual protections under the law, but as long as real estate in America remains the Wild West, living in single-family housing is and will remain an absolutely necessary act of self-defense.

Mixed zoning would be good, though. Being able to walk to at least a convenience store would be, well, convenient. If the prices there aren't ludicrously high, anyway, which is a serious problem with convenience stores today.

  • Good. TPM firmware is a high-value attack surface that, if penetrated, gives the attacker complete and irreversible control over the entire machine. It's also proprietary code and only receives security updates for a small fraction of its service life, so it's most likely riddled with vulnerabilities. It should be disabled, as much as possible, if you at all value the security of your system.
