So, you propose that I live in a state of perpetual nausea from eating nothing but horrid-tasting, questionably-nutritious, plant-based “food” instead of actual food, and then die in the apocalypse anyway? No thanks. Civilization is done for, living in it is miserable enough already, and I am not interested in sacrificing what few shreds of happiness remain in order to accomplish basically nothing.

The only way to avert the coming disaster is decisive, mandatory action from the top of society on down, and that obviously isn't going to happen, so the best I can realistically hope for is to live it up and be dead before it gets really ugly.

But I still do what I asked of others: I reduce my footprint

Not as much as you could. You still live in shelter, use electricity, exhale carbon, eat carbon-absorbing plants, and excrete methane. Humanity's very existence is driving global warming. There is no escape.

None of these things are going to happen. The rich will string you up by the toenails before they let you derail their gravy train, and your fellow proles will cheer as they do it. That's why we're doomed: powerful people are enforcing our doom, and everyone else worships them.

That's a pretty absurd take in 2023. Tracking and surveillance is rampant these days.

It's pretty hard to hand-write a QR code, I don't wish to pay the printer cartel $50 for the privilege of printing it, and it would of course be horribly insecure to print it with someone else's printer.

And how would I use the QR code? I can't scan it with my phone's camera because allowing my phone access to my GitHub account is a security risk, and I can't scan it with my desktop because it doesn't have a camera.

So, how is this going to work? How do I recover my GitHub account without making it less secure than it is with just a password?

The use of a “secure enclave” for any purpose is a bug at best, because secure enclaves aren't just secure against your adversaries; they're also secure against you. This is intolerable. All machines must obey their owner, and “secure enclaves” by design don't.

If even highly skilled humans couldn't do that, artificial pseudointelligence doesn't stand a chance in hell.

There's nothing of substance here. Just suits chasing buzzwords. Nothing will actually happen, just like nothing actually happened every other time some fancy new programming language or methodology came along and tried to replace COBOL, including Java.

And how, exactly, do you expect to institute this proposal over the objections of the rich? Every previous attempt to do something like this, like the communist revolutions in Russia and China, ended up killing millions of people and accomplishing nothing of virtue, because the rich retained power and forcibly twisted the new post-revolution economy into something even worse than capitalism.

If the serpent in the Garden of Eden was Satan, then Satan was the first liar, told the first lie, and humanity doomed itself by believing that lie.

These people listen to and believe liars who tell them to, among other things, “drill, baby, drill,” which will surely doom us all if believed widely enough, so the comparison is apt.

Sheeple follow, it’s just what they do, just like water flows downhill and stars burn brightly - they literally cannot do otherwise, no matter how much you might wish it so.

But they can. They have brains to think and eyes to see and ears to hear. Nor is it some obscure secret that their leaders are lying to them; it is common knowledge. Nor are they forced to listen to infamous liars; they choose to. Do not absolve them from responsibility for their disgraceful behavior.

Degrowth means job loss. Job loss means no income. No income means no food. No food means starvation.

If you want degrowth, you want to see billions dead, because that is what degrowth means.

Wait'll you see what effect this ends up having on those cities, then decide how apt the comparison is.
