  • Fake news. Modern RPis need up to 25W PSU. Even old laptops could idle lower than that, as otherwise they wouldn't be able to get significant battery life. Turning off the screen will also really lower their power consumption.

  • Laptops don't even use that much power. You guys are really not into home labbing or as good with tech as you think you are lol. Lots of people run older real servers and desktops as home servers. They use way more power than laptops. Raspberry Pis sound good but use progressively more power in each generation, and still struggle to compete with mini PCs and even older laptops in performance. They also never had good performance per watt. In performance per watt basically nothing beats a Mac Mini, though other mini PCs are also good. Laptops aren't bad in energy efficiency either. They are literally designed to run on battery so have as little idle draw as possible. They would be comparable to a mini PC if you turn off the display.

Edit: Modern RPis apparently use 25W, which is firmly in the territory of what a laptop would use when not running the screen or charging the battery.

  • Yes actually still sounds good. Raspberry Pis actually have quite high power draw compared to the performance they give. Like sure the number might be smallish but the performance they give and functionality they have is awful compared to even a mini PC which use similar power. Mini PCs btw are actually one of the best options in performance per watt and can still be cheap, plus they have upgradable RAM and storage. A Mac mini is more expensive but will thrash everything else in efficiency and performance per watt, although non-upgradable. Even slightly older laptops will only draw tens of watts when fully charged, vs a desktop or proper server that could pull 100W even at idle in some cases. Older laptops tended to be more upgradable too.

  • You realise that to deradicalise someone you actually have to speak to them, right? I believe this is what the guy you are talking to is referring to. Deradicalisation is something both governments and leftists do when someone goes to the far right. The answer isn't just screaming, ignoring, and killing people all the time. Have you never heard the term diversity of tactics?

  • As far as I can see you're the person who brought up Nazis out of nowhere. That's what they are making fun of. People randomly screaming Nazi and calling people nazis for no good reason. This was a meme about capitalists exploiting workers and basically running the planet. It had nothing to do with Nazis specifically or even American specifically yet you seem hyperfixated on both of these things for some reason. You don't even seem to understand what Nazis even are, saying things like Marxists can be Nazis which is patently absurd. Have you ever heard of Godwin's law?

  • Am I missing something here? Where did anyone express support for Trump? This is the first I have heard about him in this thread - unless I have missed something obvious here this topic along with Nazism has come out of nowhere. I thought this meme was about capitalist exploitation or something. When did US politics get involved?

  • Why couldn't you just get home internet? If you can afford the kind of computer that uses RAID 0 out of the box, you can surely afford Internet at home. Plus you would probably make up most of the difference in the reduces mobile bill.

  • Why would you buy SSDs for backup purposes? Buy an external hard drive, they aren't expensive. You should be making backups anyway so it's not really an excuse, go and buy a NAS or something if you have no backup solution at all. Yes you should have done it right away if you were going to do it. Having RAID 0 as your only copy of valuable data is an awful idea. What on earth are you doing?

  • Your phrasing implied that the other system would have blaringly loud fans, which it probably does not, at least if they built and configured it properly. Since people thinking more fans equals louder is an easy misconception to have I jumped to the conclusion that you had made that error. Maybe you didn't mean to imply that the other system would be loud.

Giving me the definition of blaring wasn't actually helpful in any way. I knew what the word meant, so that wasn't the actual issue. You failed to accurately understand or communicate the problem when trying to correct someone, and sounded like a pretentious knob doing it.

  • Removing the drives from a raid array wouldn't be that complicated. This is just laziness at this point.

I kind of agree on using Windows though. My two main machines are dual booted for a reason.

  • That's why you should always test on a variety of screen sizes including mobile. That however doesn't mean you should make your devs work on terrible machines. Then you end up in situations where it dosen't scale correctly. It's also terrible for developer productivity, many of whom don't even work on the front end. I don't think the cost of PCs is anywhere near that of offices, and I suspect the reason for not having offices isn't monetary anyway.
