Way too early to proclaim that. You might as well proclaim Lemmy the same - after all, the controversy over Reddit will fade in time and so too will interest in moving away from it.

If you can't tell the difference on the screen it should make no damn odds how the image was stored.

The reason it's unnecessary is that digital can completely capture a 70mm in high enough resolution that you perceive no difference at all. 8 or 16K projection is completely feasible in commercial projection systems. It means the cinema only has to deal with a small box instead of an enormous roll of film.

That doesn't mean either digital IMAX since that's old tech using something like 2K projection which isn't adequate.

At this point I only buy Smartphones with Android One label (Stock Android without anything changed). Samsung especially is full of bloat.

Bloat is bad enough but Samsung devices now have ad/crap/spyware baked into them and you can't even disable some of it.

Disable "Mobile services manager". Samsung phones are lousy with crapware these days so I would avoid them like the plague. An eldery relative asked me why he kept seeing ad popups and his device had something called "Samsung Free" that cannot be disabled or completely turned off which pushes news articles, ads and other shit at him. I just turned off as many "interests" as I could and attempted to opt out of the software but it's still there and swiping left on the home page re-enables it. Samsung phones are absolute dogshit these days. I wouldn't go near one unless they could be rooted and flashed out of the box.

The danger here is that Threads will suddenly be > 99% of the activity and user base in one fell swoop. You might find that Mastodon doesn't scale as well as you think. It might also be that Threads deliberately or half assedly doesn't federate properly, so that being a non-Threads user means posts aren't visible inside of Threads or suffer from down ranking or other issues.

I'd add that historically federation hasn't gone well when a big fish enters a small pond. XMPP was cited above as an example of that. At the time you had proprietary services like AOL / AIM, ICQ, Instant Messenger. XMPP was going to liberate us from proprietary and even Google got on board for a bit before dumping it.

The problem with big companies is they want all the cake to themselves and abhor having to yield control or cooperate with others. Meta might make nice noises about ActivityPub while they're the underdog to Twitter but you could see them rapidly change their tune if Twitter went under.

Doesn't seem surprising. It's the new shiny thing and then interest wanes a bit. Probably same holds true of Lemmy IMO. That said Threads is now a viable replacement for Twitter and advertisers might decide one platform is a toxic cesspit and the other isn't (and has some big crossover influencers) and spend accordingly. Even if it only hurts Twitter by a few % of revenue, that still more losses for Musk's ego purchase and it should be seen as a good thing.

Threads is allegedly going to support ActivityPub so theoretically itself and Mastodon, and Lemmy could all have some kind of federated access to each other. But Threads is an enormous whale in a pond of minows so how that would work is anyone's guess.

Seems pretty clear cut to me.

Now pretend you are Apple. They'll see this legislation and think - "we want people to buy new phones, not keep what they have, so we need to fuck with users to make that happen". So maybe they'll define battery to include battery management system. Maybe even some DRM and some proprietary or encrypted device communication in between the battery and the phone. Now it's hard for anyone to use their phone with an OEM battery because of the DRM. Or if they do permit OEM batteries then Apple could be dicks and put scary popups on the screen like they do when people replace their screens and gimp the battery so they can't charge or discharge as fast .

And Apple could go further. If they're the only ones selling ungimped batteries, they can control the price of those batteries and sell them sky high. $150 sounds like a great fuckoff price point to deter people. And who's to say how many batteries they hold in stock - just because the phone has replaceable batteries doesn't mean Apple sells batteries.

So that's what you have to worry about. EU legislation does have some wording controlling spare part availability and prohibiting software restrictions on batteries so I would hope that is sufficient, but who knows.

Pretty unnecessary in this digital age

Problem with legislation like this is it frequently doesn't take into account that companies like Apple can be devious assholes. Every loop hole has to be anticipated and covered before it can be exploited.

My experience is that it's 95% of the way there and has the potential to do it all. I think Lemmy needs time to coalesce as a thing and for defacto groups to emerge that replace the ones over on Reddit.

docker is part of it but not everything in and of itself. You probably need a docker compose where database, frontends, backends are separate images but possibly something more than that, kubernetes pods, and storage being separate. Probably cloud based or has cloud based backend options. I think a script could make the process easy and scale appropriately.

All governments, large NGOs, and news orgs should do this. Maybe there should be a "mastodon in a box" which is a simplified containerized version of the service which makes it easy to set up and secure.

Starlink must be getting like that in some places. The further away from civilization you are, the better the service. Use it in the footprint of a city and you'll probably regret it.

Do they change the number plates? If I were a car rental company and I copped onto this happening I'd be calling my legal team.

My kids are coeliac so we have a greater need to cook meals for ourselves. So we prefer staying in rented apartments / villas etc when on holiday. There are some aparthotels where a kitchen and actual bedrooms are available and we'll use those if they are affordable. Private accommodation also tends to be larger though and if airbnb seems sketchy there are also property rental companies - when we're in Florida we tend to rent a villa from one of these and it's been all fine. We're going to Turkey this year and have rented a top floor apartment overlooking a marina.
